In The Lab: Blu on the Making of Good To Be Home

Tuesday, April 15th, 2014

Words by Daniel Isenberg (@StanIpcus)

It’s no secret—Blu’s got bars. Those who have been following his career since before he graced the XXL Freshmen cover in 2009 alongside cats like Curren$y and Kid Cudi already know that, though. But Blu’s capabilities go above and beyond cypher skills. The guy knows how to make a dope project. His 2007 LP with Exile Below the Heavens is widely considered an underground classic, and for good reason. And there’s a long trail of other outstanding releases (his discography is too deep to highlight honestly, and he’s done some ill guest spots too with everyone from The Roots to Roc Marciano) leading us to his upcoming double album Good To Be Home, which is due out May 20th. Produced entirely by frequent collaborator Bombay and with features by Prodigy, Alchemist, Evidence, Fashawn, Casey Veggies, Imani of The Pharcyde, and more, this latest effort is Blu’s ode to California, the coast he calls home. And if his lowrider-ready first single “The West” is any indication of what we can expect from the double LP, we’re in for a soulful, sunny, and straight-up special listening experience.

For our latest In The Lab, Blu—who’s been in Paris working on something that’s still under wraps—found some downtime to shoot us an e-kite and take us behind the scenes of Good to Be Home, giving us a few insights into what his studio life was like while he was putting together the double album. And he dropped a couple bonus tidbits for the series, too. Vibe out with Blu below.

Common Signs To Warner Bros. Records

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Common & No I.D. pictured with Warner staff after signing with the label today.

Billboard.com is reporting that this afternoon, Warner Bros. co-president/CEO Todd Moscowitz announced the signing at a Warner Bros. function and Common was on hand to confirm the news.

“I’m very grateful to be a part of this family, to be a part of this team,” Common told crowd in the Warner Bros. Records courtyard. “We have very inspirational, exciting music to team up with you. We’re just open to what this change can bring.”

We’re still waiting for that Nas/Comm single that was supposed to drop yesterday and for which the snippet leaked out last month.

Another pic below. Heads up via XXL, pics swiped from RR.

Curren$y Preps Weekend at Burnie’s Release

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Pitchfork reports that Curren$y’s next (street) album and official Warner Bros. debut is called Weekend at Burnie’s (pictured above) and is arriving June 28th. First single is Spitta’s iTunes release “#Jetsgo”. Monsta Beatz will be handling the production for the entire project, minus the single (produced by Rahki).

Make sure to note the new dates for his North American tour after the jump, which no longer seem to include a stop in my city.

Rick Ross Signs MMG to Warner Bros.

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

When news of a “bidding war” broke, it was obvious Rick Ross wasn’t going to sign his Maybach Music Group to any other rapper (Jay-Z/Diddy/Lil Wayne). Ross wanted to be his own “boss” who had his own artists. It only made sense that he was going to sign to Warner, to me at least, especially after this clip surfaced of him (and his leading lady) having a meeting with Todd Moscowitz. Plus MMG’s twitter account quoting Lyor Cohen the other week sorta gave it away.

Its official!!!!!! @maybachmusicgrp has partnered with Warner Bros!!!!!!!!!!!s/o Lyor Cohen..Tod..Joey I.e..dallas..and mybrother GucciPucciless than a minute ago via Seesmic for Android

Miss Info has some exclusive details and says Rick Ross’ upcoming album, God Forgives, I Don’t will still be coming out on Def Jam Records.

UPDATE: Hit the jump for part one of Rick Ross’ 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend in L.A. blog.

Gucci Mane – The Return of Mr. Zone 6 (Cover)

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Gucci’s first street album since being arrested, then committed to a mental facility. Funny enough, it features a sketch of Gucci Mane’s face, similar to the cover of the (Asylum-approved) Gucci x Diplo remix-tape.

Who knows, considering all of his recent run-ins with the law, the police sketch might be the new in-house go-to Gucci Mane press pic. It was even updated for historical accuracy.

Full track listing after the jump.

WIz Khalifa Leaves Warner Bros.

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I’ve heard that this was in the works for a minute, and now it’s official. Good for you brother. No reason to sit around stagnating on a major label roster when you’ve got a genuine buzz going. It’s a straight up travesty that nobody over there could figure out figure what do with this kid in the two years that they had him under contract.

Hit the jump for the full press release.
