Afeni Shakur Passes Away at 69

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Afeni Shakur, mother of Tupac, passed away last night at a hospital near her home in Sausalito, California around 10:30 pm. Authorities had responded to an emergency call that seems to indicate that she may have suffered from cardiac arrest around 9:30, and she was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Prior to the birth of her son, Shakur was known to be an active member of the Black Panther party. An original member of the infamous Panther 21, a group of Panthers that stood trial in New York City in 1969 on charges of plotting to bomb two police stations and other targets, Shakur and he co-defendants (including ‘Pac’s dad Billy Garland) were acquitted of all charges in 1971. Pac was born Lesane Parish Crooks a month later.

Freddie Foxxx on The Combat Jack Show

Friday, June 27th, 2014

The legendary Freddie Foxxx aka Bumpy Knuckles appeared on the The Combat Jack Show and shared a lot of unfiltered rap history. Freddie discussed meeting Chuck D during a time where his life was on the line for the culture, his relationship with Tupac, being down with the Paid In Full Posse (Eric B.), his battle-rapping past, what happened with Queen Latifah/Flavor Unit, getting blackballed by Steve Stoute, what business lessons he learned from being around Naughty by Nature/D.I.T.C., being around Nas during his beef with Jay-Z and of course, his most famous beatdown stories dispelled.

I’m probably forgetting a lot but the full 2 hours is worth the time.

Video: Tupac Shakur on Life and Death

Wednesday, December 4th, 2013

This uncut recording of Tupac speaking to writer Benjamin Svetkey at a Hollywood restaurant in 1994 is kind of chilling. After ‘Pac orders some spring rolls and Dungeness crab cakes, he opens the conversation with the following answer to Svetkey’s question about where he saw himself in the next 10 to 15 years:

Best case: in a cemetery. Not in a cemetery. Sprinkled in ashes, smoked up by my homies. Worst case… I mean that’s the worst case. That’s the worst case. That’s the worst case. Best case: multimillionaire. Owning all of this shit.

As we now know, ‘Pac’s seemingly paranoid musings were tragically on-point. Within 3 years he would be gone, shot down in the streets of Vegas, his ashes later sprinkled into a blunt by the Outlawz.

This animated clip was put together by the PBS blog Blank on Blank as part of their ongoing series of lost interviews with iconic figures. You can read the profile of ‘Pac that Svetkey wrote for Entertainment Weekly after this meeting here.

Video: Tupac’s ’96 Photoshoot w/ David LaChapelle

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

This is very ill. Ffiteen minutes of super rare footage of Pac’s infamous bathtub photo shoot with renowned photographer David LaChapelle shortly after his release from prison.

Here are some of Lachappelle’s comments on the shoot:

DM: I feel that a lot of your work emphasises on beauty in people, regardless of colour or size. One of my favourite pieces of your work is “Becoming Clean” with Tupac Shakur amongst others. How was it like work with him?

DL: Tupac was great, he was very sensitive and is truly a good person. I wrote to his mum when he died and she sent me flowers and gave me his last song, “Ghetto Gospel.” When we did the shoot, he had just come out of prison and every shot has a reason, it’s never random, so this was the idea of the photo shoot, him becoming clean. He had given this interview when he was still in prison and he really opened up and was so honest. I had read it and thought it was so truthful so for the work I did with him, there was this idea of washing away and rebirth. And we did another shoot where he posed as a slave on a cotton field. They traced rapping and rhyming to “call and repeat” during slavery time in sugar cane and cotton fields to pass the time. It’s on the Hotel Lachapelle book. Tupac came to the shoot 2 hours early, which was very unusual for a rapper. So I wasn’t ready for the shoot and he didn’t care. He reminded me of my black friends whom I went to art schools with, he was so cool, open-minded and chill. He wasn’t judgemental. Then later on, I found out that he had gone to an art school. He left behind a big bag of socks and underwear because he had just come out from prison and never picked it up. He died shortly after. I still wear his socks sometimes (laughs).

CNN Reports New Leads in Biggie Murder Case

Friday, January 7th, 2011

According to CNN a new task force has been set up to explore fresh leads in the cold case of Biggie’s murder.

According to one law enforcement source, the investigation into the 13-year-old unsolved case was “reinvigorated” months ago as a result of new information, but the source would not elaborate further because of the ongoing investigation that includes the Los Angeles Police Department, L.A. County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI.

There’s not a whole lot of information beyond what these unidentified sources are reporting, but CNN brought in retired LAPD detective Russell Poole to espouse his theory that Suge is responsible for the murders of both Biggie and Tupac.

Wouldn’t that be some shit if they solved this thing now, 13 years after the fact, well after everybody has come to terms with the idea that it would never be solved? What if it comes out that Suge did order the shooting? And the hit on Pac? Would he be the most reviled person in Hip-Hop history? The Rap Hitler if you will? One thing’s for sure: there’d be 10,000 niggas waving guns around on Youtube with bandanas on their face, threatening Suge’s whole family.
