A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai share the b-side to their Snoop assisted lead single “There Is Only Now”.

Here’s a breakdown of the concept behind the album and how this track fits into the narrative:

The track “All You Got Is Your Word” falls in the first half of the storyline of the concept album. Set in 1994, There Is Only Now reads like a audio-only blaxploitation film with drama, suspense, and plot twists involving strong character roles played by Busta Rhymes, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Snoop Dogg, William Hart of The Delfonics, Scarub from Living Legends, and all four members of Souls of Mischief, who play themselves. The plot of the entire album is based on a violent near-death experience the Souls of Mischief actually encountered in San Francisco in 1994. “All You Got Is Your Word” comes into play during a significant part of the plot which involves a kidnapping of a Souls member and takes place during a flashback to a show they did at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. The message of the song is simple: Regardless of your successes, failures, trials and tribulations, all you have is your word. “So make it something you can stand behind,” explains Tajai.

Fresh off his well received collaborative LP with Ghostface, producer Adrian Younge has announced his next project: a concept album with Souls of Mischief that will be narrated by Ali Shaheed Muhammad of ATCQ.

Younge described the project to XXL during a recent interview:

…It’s a project that if somebody misses the sounds of 93 ’til Infinity meets The Low End Theory meets De La Soul Is Dead. If somebody misses that kind of sound, they’ll be happy to hear this album because it goes back to that time, you know. Kind of like how the Ghostface album [12 Reasons To Die] kind of went back to that time. And I love both styles of music back then, so I’m very, very excited.

“And it’s also a concept album too—Souls of Mischief almost gets killed by some dude that was just crazy and the whole album just starts off with this incident, and then it blossoms into these different stories that are a result of this volatile incident. And that’s basically what that album is about.
