Raekwon on His CL-95 Linx Beach Jacket

Monday, June 22nd, 2015

In honor of the year-long 20th anniversary celebration of his solo debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Raekwon has commissioned a special edition “Linx Beach” jacket based on a timeless ‘Lo classic. The custom designed piece pays homage to one of the most iconic Polo items ever manufactured: the highly sought after Snow Beach jacket.

A brightly colored snowboarding pullover that instigated many a beatdown in the early to mid 90’s, I think it’s fair to say that the original ‘Lo jacket probably owes about 50% of its popularity to Raekwon himself for immortalizing it in the “Can It All Be So Simple” video.

Now, I don’t speak for all ‘Lo heads the world over, but I’m guessing that this is not something that most true collectors who were actually around during the era of the original would rock in public. Personally, I’d just throw on my real Beach because honestly, what can fuck with the original? That being said, this is pretty sweet piece of Rap memorabilia and I wouldn’t mind having one of these bad boys for my “cool rap shit” collection.

As you may or may not know, myself and my man Dallas Penn share an affinity for vintage Ralph Lauren Polo. He grew up in Queens and I was raised in Yonkers, but when we first met back during the mid 2000’s, we had an instant connection through our shared passion. In recent years, collectible ‘Lo has seen something of a resurgence amongst collectors of vintage fresh, but the history behind this shit goes back well over 25 years.

These days, anybody can be fresh. There are countless blogs and websites that document and curate all of the latest and greatest in street and men’s wear in what can sometimes feel like real time. Back during the Golden Age of ‘Lo, there were no lookbooks or street style blogs to keep you updated, you either saw something in the store, on the streets or in a Rap video. Like myself, Dallas was heavily influenced by ‘Lo cameos in several early to mid 90’s music videos and so we brought him in to talk about some of the legendary moments that helped shape and continue to influence style to this day.

Thirstin Howl III shows off his infant son’s already ridiculous’Lo collection. My son is about 8 months right now, but I have to admit, I haven’t really laced him yet. I’m gonna have to rectify that. It’s never too early to school the babies. I wish somebody would have schooled me from an early age. This generation of kids with parents from the rap era don’t know how lucky they are. We had to figure this shit out ourselves. It’s funny though because most of my ‘Lo is in storage at my parents house and lately when they’ve been stopping by to visit, my pops has been coming through rocking some of my old pieces. SMH. I guess it works both ways.

A few weeks ago I posted a track called “Lo Sweatas” by a crew outta Chicago called Project Mayhem and all sorts of shit popped off in the comments. Apparently this cat Meyhem, (who also rocks ‘Lo and runs with J-Love), or some of his peoples, took exception to Project Mayhem’s choice of group name. I’ve heard Meyhem’s name before, although I’m not really up on his music, but if we’re gonna talk about ‘Lo, the crown automatically goes to anybody with a NY zip-code.

Oh, and Mega Montana is on this. That is all.
