Video: Phife Dawg – Nutshell

Wednesday, April 6th, 2016

Damn man, Phife’s voice has so much life on this it’s almost inconceivable to think that he’s no longer with us. The first new song from the A Tribe Called Quest legend to drop since his passing, “Nutshell” is already notable, but a beat by the late J Dilla makes it even more special. Phife recorded this for Give Thanks, the LP he was working on when he died, and it is now being released as a posthumous single.

The video premiered Tuesday tonight at the Apollo Theater during a special tribute show for the fallen icon and features words from Mike G of The Jungle Brothers, Q-Tip, Posdonous, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi, Redman, Redman and others. Half of the proceeds from the sale of “Nutshell” will be donated to the American Diabetes Association and the National Kidney Foundation.

Listen and watch below. UPDATED: Below I have added video of Kanye West’s speech at the Phife tribute show in Harlem last night, as well as the full text of Andre 3000’s remarks, during which he revealed that there was talk of an Outkast/ATCQ collaborative album at one point.

Phife Dawg of ATCQ Passes Away at 45

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016

Malik Taylor, known to fans of Hip-Hop the world over as Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest, passed away yesterday (March 22) at the age of 45. No official cause of death has been revealed, but Phife had battled diabetes for much of his life and received a kidney transplant in 2008. I’ve spoken in the past about how much of an influence ATCQ was on me as a young Rap fan and Phife’s iconic verses were a huge part of that. We probably toss the word “legend” around a bit more than we should in this culture, but I am supremely confident in calling The 5 Foot Assassin a true legend of Rap.

Phife’s relationship with his group mates, specifically Q-Tip, was complicated and often fraught, just like the personal relationships many of us share. The fact that he was able to reunite with his partners for reunion performances over the past few years, and speak to their legacy in Michael Rappaport’s excellent documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life, was a blessing. We’ll always remember you Phife, you truly touched a generation, and your legacy is guaranteed.

UPDATED with a statement from Phife’s family on his passing below.

Consequence joins Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds for a special A Tribe Called Quest themed installment of Juan Epstein. He touches on everything from Q-Tip’s guest spot on “Buddy”, to his work on “Groove Is In The Heart”, all the way up to Cons’ extensive presence on Beats, Rhymes And Life and how he found himself in the middle of the Q-Tip vs. Phife static during a conversation at Phife’s crib in Atlanta. It’s a fascinating listen for any big Tribe fan and it provides a bunch of context for some of the group’s most iconic records and their historic split.
