Surely, you already know and love Ice Cube’s seminal 1991 sophomore solo album, Death Certificate. Perhaps it was a bit before your time, and if that’s the case, now would be a great time to get familiar. The album was extremely controversial back in the early 90’s for reasons ranging from his perceived encouragement of violence towards Korean-Americans to his scathing diss track “No Vaseline”. But there are also many socio-political ideas presented here that are extraordinarily relevant in the present day and will likely remain so for some time. In commemoration of the LP’s 25th anniversary, which actually landed back in October of 2016, Cube gives us an updated and remastered edition with three new songs: “Only One Me”, “Good Cop, Bad Cop” and “Dominate The Weak.”

Cold 187um ft. Ice Cube & The D.O.C. – Legacy

Friday, October 7th, 2016

Well, this lineup is both extremely gangster and historic. If you’re familiar with your 90’s West Coast Rap history, you know that Cold 187um and his Above The Law crew were embroiled in a legendary beef with Ice Cube following Cube’s departure from N.W.A. You also probably know that The D.O.C, the pen behind some of the N.W.A and Dr. Dre’s most iconic tracks, was involved in a car accident in 1989 that severed his vocal cords, effectively ending his Rap career. So yeah, for these three to unite on a record in 2016 is pretty special. This new track “Legacy”, produced by Laylaw and SClass, will appear on 187um’s upcoming album The Black Godfather, due out October 10th.

Here’s a clip from last night’s episode of The Nightly Show where Common and Ice Cube sit down with host Larry Wilmore at a barbershop to discuss their new film and some of the racial issues plaguing American society in 2016. They tear down the conservative right’s bullshit strawman argument about Black on Black crime, as well as the hypocritical stance law enforcement puts forth on snitching.
