The loss of Gil Scott-Heron at the still tender age of 62 this past weekend was a huge blow to music. He’s one of those figures that it’s hard to even put into words how important he was to this thing that brings us altogether. At least he got a chance to share one final project with the world and work with some of the artists he helped birth before he moved on.

Pitchfork confirms that Gil Scott-Heron passed away today, at the age of 62, according to a publicist at his record label.

NPR reports:

Gil Scott-Heron died Friday afternoon in New York. He was 62. The influential poet and musician is often credited with being one of the progenitors of hip-hop, and is best known for the spoken-word piece “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.”

The Daily Swarm points to the Twitter account of his publisher in the U.K. who apparently broke the news.

Gil Scott-Heron will be at S.O.B.’s on Sunday for their Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away.

The tradition continues with SOBs’ annual Martin Luther King Jr Day celebration, with one of the people responsible for the United States’ adoption of the national holiday. Gil Scott-Heron celebrates MLK Day on Sunday, January 11th.

The revered musician and poet, most famous for the 1970’s era-defining poem, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, returns to the legendary S.O.B.’s for his first show in 2009. A long time civil rights activist, Gil Scott-Heron is the author of a book on the history of MLK Day and returns to S.O.B.’s for two intimate shows commemorating the holiday.
