The Making of Gang Starr’s Hard to Earn with DJ Premier

Friday, March 7th, 2014

Gangstarr’s Hard To Earn will always hold a special place in my heart. The LP dropped on March 8th, 1994 and it was DJ Premier and the late Keith “Guru” Elam at the top of their game. Released two years after the similarly lauded Daily Operation, this album was an example of a group giving fans exactly what they wanted before we even had a chance to want it. At the time, Guru was one of my favorite MCs and Hard To Earn just solidified his status as one of the best to ever do it.

In honor of the 20 year anniversary of the album, we spoke to DJ Premier about how it all came together. He explained the album’s sparse sound and walked us through the creation of what are now recognized as some of the more timeless cuts from their well respected and extensive catalog. From “Code of The Streets” to the “Aiiight Chill…” skit, “Mass Appeal” to ” Mostly Tha Voice”, it’s all here.

I have to give a special shout to UpNorthTrips for contributing some amazing archival images for the piece, as well as a custom mix highlighting some of the album’s samples by their in-house DJ The Vinylcologist. Listen below.

Video: DJ Premier Remembers Guru

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

“The letter didn’t exist, which I didn’t… I wasn’t worried about that anyway, “said Primo. “Even if he did write that letter, I know how he writes. I’ve been around this guy for 23 years. I know everything about him and I know his family real well and they’re down with me, they ride with me.”
Primo went on to share intimate details of Guru’s funeral in which he and originating Gang Starr member Big Shug eulogized the fallen rap legend.

“We had a private funeral with his remains there and [I] spoke at the funeral,” shared the prolific producer. “It was a lovely ceremony. I did everything from the heart off my head, which is how you’re supposed to do it.”

Guru Out of Surgery, Recovering

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Good news and bad news. Guru’s surgery went well and he is recovering. Unfortunately, he’s not out of the woods yet. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed or pray or whatever it is we individually do when we’re hoping for the best.

I can’t overstate the importance of Gangstarr and Guru to me during my formative years. Over the span of about 5 years him and Preem, along with artists like Redman, Lord Finesse and ATCQ were the center of my rap universe. I can honestly say that this site wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for these cats.

Get well soon brother.
