Vintage Video: Talib Kweli And Friends at Fat Beats Circa 1998

Thursday, August 14th, 2014

DJ Eclipse continues to drop vintage gems. Here’s footage of a fresh faced Talib Kweli participating in a cypher at the NYC Fat Beats location in 1998. Joining him in the session are L-Fudge, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Skam2 & A.L. Skills. Kweli spits a verse that that contains lines that would eventually end up on tracks such as the Beatles influenced “Lonely People”, and Black Star’s “Twice Inna Lifetime”. I’m pretty sure I see my man DJ Peter Parker standing on the sidelines.

Eclipse explains:

In 1998 both L-Fudge and Shabaam Sahdeeq released 12″ singles on Rawkus Records. Rawkus had been around for a minute, but it was with this era of releases that they really started making some noise (along with Company Flow, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Sir Menelik, The High & Mighty and others). Here’s footage from the Fat Beats NYC in-store celebrating the release of these two singles. Like most FB in-stores, it was never limited to just the advertised artists. In this clip you’ll see L-Fudge, Talib Kweli, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Skam2? & A.L. Skills all performing. Shout out to Max Glazer on the wheels although he’s unseen.

Video: Tanya Morgan – So Damn Down (Live at Fat Beats)

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Video footage of Tanya Morgan‘s live, in-store performance of their single “So Damn Down” at the world-famous Fat Beats record store in NYC.

Live from the famed Fat Beats record store in the heart of New York City, we get a front row view as we watch Tanya Morgan perform their single “So Damn Down” from their recently released album Brooklynati. Director Court Dunn’s choice of sepia tone for the video gives it a timeless feel, which is perfect for the hallowed grounds of the store. An engaging and energetic group of performers, the boys from Tanya Morgan put on a good show wherever they are, be it on stage at a sold out venue or amidst mountains of vinyl in the bowels of Fat Beats. Donwill and Ilyas are out in front on the mics, while emcee/producer Von Pea holds it down on the turntables (rumor has it there were only two mics available, so the boys made do without skipping a beat). Von eventually jumps down to join his crew for his, the third and final verse of the joint. It’s a packed house for this live performance, and Tanya Morgan does not disappoint.

Cop Tanya Morgan’s Brooklynati on iTunes.
