Black Sheep Dres on Juan Epstein

Monday, July 21st, 2014

Black Sheep frontman and now prolific solo artist Dres joins Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds for the latest Juan Ep. I have not had the pleasure of listening to this yet, but Peter assures me it’s worth our time.

Dres came by to tell the Black Sheep story and much more. We end up having a pretty in depth Chuck D conversation as well. I would tell you this is not awesome, but I would be lying. It is awesome!

Once you’re done with that, be sure to check out the two pieces we did with Dres back in May, around the time  that he debuted “We Can All Share”, his new single:

Heavy Rotation with The Black Sheep Dres

Tuesday, May 27th, 2014

Words by Daniel Isenberg (@StanIpcus)

Last week, we premiered a new song by The Black Sheep Dres (formerly known as just Dres of legendary Native Tongues duo Black Sheep), and also published our first ever Pick 6 with him, where he told us the stories behind six of his classic Black Sheep joints and solo collaborations. In addition, we spoke to Dres about the songs that have inspired his music over the years for our Heavy Rotation series. As you will see, he has a deep love for soul music, and also cuts that feature his favorite instrument, the piano. Check out Dres’ selections below, and stay tuned for his upcoming project, which is being produced by DJ Premier (who he recently recorded a Bars in the Booth episode with) and Showbiz.

Premiere: The Black Sheep Dres – We Can All Share

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

It is with great honor that we premiere The Black Sheep Dres’ latest release, “We Can All Share,” produced by DJ Bazooka Joe. This is the first of a series of leaks we can expect from Dres via Tommy Boy, and be excited, because he’s also been in the studio hard at work on a new project with DJ Premier and Showbiz. Check the flavor, and also, click the link below to read our Pick 6 interview with Dres (the first part of our double feature week with him) where he tells the stories behind six of his songs that we selected from his classic catalog. You’ll find out about the early Black Sheep days in North Carolina, why his feelings about Lyor Cohen led to him passing on a deal at Def Jam, collaborating with De La Soul, Q-Tip, Showbiz and A.G., and Twista, and much more.

Purchase on iTunes now.

Video: EVITAN (Dres & Jarobi) – P.T.I. (Occupy Wall Street)

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Dres of Black Sheep and Jarobi of ATCQ come together as the duo EVITAN (“NATIVE” backwards) and drop their debut song and video for “P.T.I.” which was shot amongst the #OWS protestors in Zucotti Park. Dres handles all of the rhyming duties while Jarobi pretty much reprises the “moral supporter/hypeman” role he played during his time with Tribe. Look out for an as yet untitled LP to drop from the duo early next year.

Video: Black Sheep – For The Record

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

The new Black Sheep album, From The Black Pool of Genius, which is really the new Dres album, is in stores today. Here’s a video for a cut named “For The Record” off the project.

Says Dres:

“‘For The Record’ is a quiet song that speaks loudly and also is me giving a little backhand to the powers that be,” continuing, “I don’t see them moving in the best interest of the people. I’m just shining a little light on the situation.”

Also, here’s another joint you can find on the album featuring R&B duo P&V.
