FEATURE: The Making of No Need For Alarm with Del the Funky Homosapien

Saturday, November 23rd, 2013

Most people who know me may not realize that I was born in Oakland, California. My family moved to White Plains, New York when I was five years old, so I grew up a New Yorker, but I always wondered to myself, “What kind of music would I be into if I still lived in Oakland?” And for that reason, Del was my dude. Listening to his shit made me feel connected to my roots in the Bay Area, and No Need For Alarm in particular was always one of my favorite albums.

To celebrate No Need For Alarm‘s 20th anniversary, which is today, I got on the phone with Del earlier this week to discuss the making of the album. It was a true honor and privilege to speak with him in detail about every song on the LP, and revisit the time period when it was put together. There are some entertaining stories in here for sure, including one about the time he took shrooms with Q-Tip at the Beastie Boys’ studio in New York. I hope the NahRight readers from my generation enjoy revisiting this Hieroglyphics classic, and the younger readers who may not be familiar with the album take the opportunity to listen along while Del tells the story of its creation.

Big shout to the OG Dante Ross for helping to set up the interview! Salute!
