Jay-Z’s Decoded Song List Revealed

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Ok, so alot of these are pretty good choices for “decoding”. Who wouldn’t like to hear the stories behind “Early This Morning” and “Coming of Age”, or the inspiration for some of the lines in “PSA” or “Moment of Clarity”? But WHAT DO YOU MEAN no “You Must Love Me”?! What’s the point of even doing the book if you’re not gonna break down that song? Then again, I guess if we’re being realistic, how deep is Jay really going to get into anything that may have happened to inspire this music.

Public Service Announcement
American Dreamin’
Early This Morning
Coming of Age
Coming of Age (Da Sequel)
99 Problems
Ignorant Shit
Most Kings
Can I Live?
Big Pimpin’
Streets Is Watching
Operation Corporate Takeover
Moment of Clarity
Breathe Easy (Lyrical Exercise)
My 1st Song
Young Gifted and Black
Hell Yeah (Pimp The System)
Beware (Jay-Z Remix)
Blue Magic
This Life Forever
Meet The Parents
Where I’m From
Minority Report
Dynasty (Intro)
My President Is Black
This Can’t Be Life
Soon You’ll Understand
Beach Chair
December 4th

I’m sure it’s no coincidence that some of these double as bonuses from his recent Greatest Hits album (“Young Gifted and Black,” “My President Is Black,” “Most Kings”).

Video: Jay-Z talks Decoded w/ MTV

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Last week, MTV had a clip of Jay explaining the Decoded scavenger hunt, and here he explains that all the clues are related to the place where they’re being featured. In this example, it’s the lyrics to “Big Pimpin” at the Delano hotel.

In related news, Kanye mentioned in his Q&A with Sway on Saturday night that the five-track Watch The Throne album with Jay-Z is now a full track LP. I figured as much when Kanye said they’d be finishing the album at the end of the month, but the full clip is after the jump for good measure.

Jay-Z Talks Decoded w/ WSJ + Excerpt

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

You too could cool out poolside at the Delano

The Wall Street Journal posted some excerpts from an interview they had with Jay-Z in his office where he mentions the not-so-coded lyrics to “Big Pimpin'” that were printed at the Decoded party in Miami last night (see pics below.)

WSJ: You’re famous for not writing your lyrics down as you compose them. What changes about them when you see them on the page like this?

Jay-Z: Some [lyrics] become really profound when you see them in writing. Not “Big Pimpin.” That’s the exception. It was like, I can’t believe I said that. And kept saying it. What kind of animal would say this sort of thing? Reading it is really harsh.

After the jump, check out an excerpt from the book that explains the lyrics to the song “American Dreamin’.”

Video: Jay-Z Breaks Down Most Kingz For Decoded

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Great little promo clip for Jay’s book that explains in detail the thought process behind “Most Kingz,” which is a song we really only got to hear in full quite recently (if you don’t count the Funk Flex freestyle and Coldplay’s “Lost+”) and is also quite cryptic in nature.

Play count is at 91 on iTunes in case you were wondering.

Props to Amazon via RR.
