Beyonce, Drake, Rihanna & Kanye Lead the 2016 Grammy Nominations

Tuesday, December 6th, 2016

This morning The Recording Academy released the nominations for the 2016 Grammy Awards and Beyonce leads the field with 9 nominations while the other three find themselves in three-way tie for second with 8 each. You can peruse the full list of noms here, but let’s take a look at some of the more notable nods and those most relevant to Rap fans. First of all, although Kanye, Drake and Rihanna are right on her heals, Bey sets herself apart with consistent nods across such important categories as Record of The Year, Song of the Year and Album of The Year. Drake joins her in the Album of the Year category for Views and he also pops up in Record of The Year, although it’s for his guest appearance on Rihanna’s “Work” rather that one of his own songs. De La Soul Is Not Dead (Documentary)

Thursday, September 8th, 2016

Here’s a great way to spend 30 minutes on a Thursday afternoon. The new De La Soul Is Not Dead documentary from Mass Appeal features commentary from Prince Paul, Dante Ross, Monica Lynch of Tommy Boy and of course Dave, Posdonous and Maseo, and it takes a look at how three outcasts from Amityville, Long Island emerged as a legendary Rap trio.

The principal players discuss how Paul, who had music industry experience from his work with Stetsasonic, nurtured the guys throughout their creative process and encouraged them to embrace their groundbreaking approach to Hip-Hop.

The main theme of the doc is the group’s evolution over the course of their first three albums and how the public perception of them as the “hippie rappers” lead to the De La Soul Is Dead LP. Also covered are the sample clearance issues that haunt them to this day, their rebirth with the Stakes Is High album and the new Kickstarter driven project and the Anonymous Nobody, which just topped the Billboard Rap charts.
