Video: Damon Dash Interview w/ Sway

Wednesday, March 4th, 2015

Dame gives Sway an extremely honest interview while promoting his new flick Loisaidas with Murda Mook and Smoke DZA (also present) & chapter 1 of his audiobook “Culture Vultures” that are both currently available on for 5 bucks a pop.

Sway & co. ask him about Kanye, he re-iterates the beef with Lee Daniels, says he can’t fuck with Jay over some informant paperwork that’s been floating around and even heats up Sway over rocking the hat all the time (40 min. mark):

At the 8:42 mark, Dash makes it clear about his feelings toward American actor, film producer, and director, Lee Daniels. Telling us that he “owes” Dash $2 Million. And also opens up about Kanye West (23:24), dropping him from his label years ago and why they should team up with his current endeavors.

What about his current relationship with Jay Z? At the 54:30 mark, he fills us in on where they stand.

Continuing to clarify the “beef” between Dash and Jim Jones (32:52 mark) — and even between him and Beanie Siegel (46:44) — he gives us some new insight and challenges us pursue “their” side of the story.

The interview is full of quotables as you’d imagine.

Damon Dash speaks with Russell Simmons’ Global Grind (remember Damon Dash Music Group?) reporter Sharon Carpenter about a variety of topics ranging from his age (41) changing his pursuits, the “old” business model, and of course Jay-Z. In this interview he comes off (or at least tries to) a little less bitter than he’s been painted in recent years, but you can be the judge of that.

DJ Premier & Pete Rock stop by DD172 for a photoshoot and kick it with Dame. Curren$y then pleads with Premier for them to smoke together (lol), and Premo reminisces on catching Big rolling a joint at Baseline and Dame admits “Big Pimpin” was when he started smoking.

Dame also discusses hip hop right now (well, this was back in March) with Corey Smith from Blacksmith and gives the example of Curren$y, Wiz and tabi all working with each other, whereas that wasn’t the case back in the days:

“Even with us, like back in the day, the values like… Honestly Roc-A-Fella would be in the elevator with Wu-Tang and say what’s up and not say another word to each other”

Damon Dash x Curren$y x Roc-A-Fella x Def Jam

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

So last week, when we posted the trailer to Curren$y’s new video, somebody over at Def Jam asked me to include a buy link for the single on iTunes. Although it was slightly more subtle than the link they had up on their site, I had to ask what was up. Apparently Dame/DD172 was trying to sign Curren$y to a P&D deal (pressing and distribution) with Def Jam through the Roc-A-Fella imprint… which belongs to Def Jam.

“The name is mine, I’ll take the blame for that”

“Def Jam or Universal bought the brand. I think the ‘beef’ [with us and Jay-Z] was that Jay made it clear he didn’t want me or Biggs to be a part of it. That’s really where it was at. Now that he doesn’t work for Def Jam anymore, he doesn’t have the right to use the name. So there’s no reason for us not to use it. It’s there, and it’s a brand that’s not being used. So I was like, ‘I’ll take it.’ It always meant something to me.”

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

All kinds of psychedelic shit went down when Damon Dash and Ski Beatz hosted an exclusive listening party for Spitta’s new project that should be dropping shortly. (Hippie-dancing and Dame rants sold separately.)

Curren$y wasn’t at his own listening session? Uh-oh.

Dame speaks to the.LIFE Files about making his return to music, for now. He talks about not being in it for the money anymore, brags and boasts about people who have money but no “swag.” He also says that Roc-A-Fella should have worked with Bad Boy, Cash Money and Wu-Tang, and that’s what Spitta is doing now.
