RIP To My Brother Combat Jack

Wednesday, December 20th, 2017

It is with great sadness and an extremely heavy heart that I report on the loss of one of Hip-Hop’s most important and influential voices, Reggie Ossé, aka Combat Jack. If you have followed this site at any point over its 12-year run then you probably know that my roots with Reggie run deep. We go back to the days before he was the GOAT Rap podcaster, when he blogged under his pseudonym and almost nobody knew his actual identity as an entertainment attorney and his extraordinary history in this culture. The first time I met Reggie was at the release party for his book Bling back in 2006. I was literally just a tech support guy who had a Rap blog on the side at that point, but he appreciated what I was trying to do and embraced me as a gamechanger before I even thought of myself as such. Through his blog and our interactions he schooled me on Rap history and shared gems I still hold close to this day.

Big K.R.I.T. on The Combat Jack Show

Wednesday, October 1st, 2014

K.R.I.T. joins Jack and Premium Pete on the latest episode of TCJS.

CJ summarizes:

King Remembered In Time makes his second Combat Jack Show appearance. On the eve of his 2nd Def Jam album ‘Cadillactica’, which drops November 11, 2014, K.R.I.T. talks about his growth as an artist, surviving his debut album “tanking”, touring with Macklemore, separating his professional and private life, being called out on Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” and why he’s about to shake up the game as he claims the south as his kingdom. This time around, I’m doubling down on this Mississippi native.

Video: Combat Jack Gives A TED Talk

Wednesday, February 5th, 2014

Would you look at this. They invited the big homie Combat Jack to give his very own TED Talk. I’m proud of this guy right here.

Reggie Ossé has been on the front lines of Hip Hop culture since it began. Growing up in NYC, eventually becoming an attorney for up-and-coming Rap stars (Jay-Z and Damon Dash to name a few), and now as the host of The Combat Jack Show podcast, Ossé didn’t just witness Hip Hop’s ascendency to popular culture, he also helped create it. But as the culture he knows and loves became assimilated into the mainstream, he could not help but feel pushed to the outside… influencing but not participating in an America in which he is an icon.

Video: Black Thought on the Combat Jack Show (Ep. 3)

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

In the third episode of the Black Thought segment of The Combat Jack Show, Jack asks Thought about getting challenged to battle. “Nobody has ever really wanted it with me,” he replies nonchalantly. “Never ever.” Later, the Philly MC speaks on the first time he heard Nas’ debut Illmatic. “I was a little bit shook,” he admits. Perhaps more surprising is how deeply he was impressed by meeting Supernatural, a less famous MC who’s renowned for his freestyling skills. “We was courting Rahzel at the time. We wanted Rahzel to be down with The Roots,” Thought explains. At the time, Rahzel was rocking with Supernatural. “Hearing Supernatural flow and feeling the amazing shit that Rahzel was doing, it had me shook…. Everybody kinda got they weight up from that point on.”
