The version that ended up on Naledge’s Chicago Picasso was initially supposed to be the Double 0 remix. The original version was actually produced by Floyd The Locsmif and you can listen to it below:

Live from Soundscape Studios. Talks about the new Kidz In The Hall album, says it’s the best music of his life (read below) and discusses dropping The Chicago Picasso.

“The Land of Make Believe, I’m feeling real great about this album. It’s the best music I’ve created in my life. This album is really a far cry from anything you’ve heard from me, Double O, or Kidz In The Hall.”

DJ Booth: You’re joined on The Chicago Picasso by the likes of Bun B, Mickey Factz, Rhymefest, Curren$y, and GLC, just to name a few. Is there anyone in particular who you made a serious effort to nail down for a feature, but either wasn’t interested in participating or never got back to you?

Naledge: Kinda like both. I don’t know if they weren’t interested—like, there were certain people who, their career took off at the time I was creating the project, and then phone calls [became] fewer and further between, where, when I initially was starting to do the joint, it made more sense for them to wanna be on it. It was like, we were in the studio, we were all in New York, talkin’ about it, and they were like, “Yeah, the beat sounds fresh, I’ma go write my verse!” and then they never get back to you.

Naledge – U Oughta Know

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Says Alex from RubyHornet:

I hope everyone is doing well. As you may know, I worked a lot on Naledge’s solo project, The Chicago Picasso. During the process, “U Oughta Know” became one of my favorite songs. The subject matter, beat, and overall vibe of it really struck me, and it was on the copy I turned into Duck Down Records. Unfortunately, the sample contained in the song is way too hard to clear, and it will not be on the official release. So, Naledge decided to drop it today, along with the story of how he got the track. Check it out at the link below, and please post if you can.

Also, if you haven’t yet, please check out our Day In The Life Video featuring some of our favorite artists. The video was made in connection to our show at Chicago’s Do Division Fest, which will feature Mick Luter, Phil G, Really Doe, Mikkey Halsted, Project Mayhem, Mike 100’s Primeridian, Naledge, and Rhymefest. If you’re in the Chicago area, please come out and enjoy on Saturday 6-8PM @ the stage located at 2121 W. Division.

Wait, you mean to tell me Naledge’s new alias is “Dark Giangreco “ [*spits drink all over computer monitor*] – now THAT’s funny.

Anyhoo, let’s get back to business. I’m not sure what everyone has planned tomorrow night (Wednesday), but you know the place to be is the release party for Naledge’s Chicago Picasso mixtape album. We will be celebrating this triumphant effort at the Leg Room in downtown Chicago tomorrow night (May 20th) starting at 10:00pm. Be sure to get there early, because you know I turn in to a pumpkin at midnight (jokes!).

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

In preparation for the release of Naledge’s Chicago Picasso:

April 20th was Dope Couture x Wale. We now present our second Hip-Hop Artist collaboration. May 20th is Dope Couture x Naledge.

The artwork features a cubist-style portrait of Naledge inspired by Picasso’s piece “Seated woman with wrist watch”. The quote on the back is from Picasso’s lettres françaises translating as “Art is an offensive weapon in the defense against the enemy.”

We will be at the Chicago Picasso release party tonight at The Legroom 7 West Division, Downtown Chicago. It’s free all night. Dress your best: no hats, no sneakers. Shirts will be available for purchase at the release party (and online starting today). Hope to see you there.

Props to Matt at Dope Couture for the exclusive look at the tee.

Naledge feat. Rus Soul – Star Struck

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Naledge will be dropping the Chicago Picasso mix CD (Hosted by Mick Boogie, RTC & DJ Timbuck2) on June 30th via Duck Down Records. It’ll will feature appearances by Bun B, Chip Tha Ripper, Jay Electronica, Mickey Factz, Mick Luter, Rhymefest, Carlita Durand, Curren$y, J Ivy, Russoul, Doe Boy, GLC & Fooch and production by Double-O, Tha Bizness, Picnic Tyme, Sa Ra Creative Partners, FDNY, Xcel, Analogic, Black Spade, SC, MStacks, Nez & Rio.

I wanted to show all aspects of Chicago, not just one sound. For a long time we’ve seen a specific side of Chicago Rap, but this mix cd provides new perspective.
The point of the mixtape was to open the vault and let the fans in on the wealth of solo material that I have recorded. I look at this mixtape more as a collection of art that I have made over time. Each song is its own original statement and with the help of Timbuck2 and RTC we have made the thoughts behind each of the songs more cohesive.
I have worked with some of the most creative people in my city, many of which I have known since childhood and that made this project all that more personal. That includes visual artists, poets, singers and emcees. People included in this proect who aren’t from Chicago were either from my time living in St. Louis, or they were people I met recording Kidz In The Hall’s “In Crowd” in New York City.
I wouldn’t call this a mixtape so much as an exhibit…hence the name Chicago Picasso. The same way Pablo Picasso created a commissioned statue that has sat downtown in Chicago for years of interpretation; I want this mixtape to float the same way.
