Big Pun & Fat Joe on The Stretch & Bobbito Show in 1995

This right here is a clutch move on the part of DJ Eclipse. If you’ve seen the new Stretch and Bobbito documentary, you know there’s an amazing moment where the pair play a #veryrare Big Pun verse for Fat Joe. I cited that moment as a great example of Stretch and Bob’s legacy and influence in my post about the film, but it’s also a pretty amazing freestyle and a historic moment in NYC Rap radio history.

Well Pun would’ve turned 44 today, and in honor of his born-day Eclipse has liberated the full audio from that August 31st, 1995 show.

He explains:

I always recorded my guest sets on KCR so I couldn’t for the life of me understand why I wouldn’t have the one Riz and I did when Fat Joe brought up Big Pun for the first time (along w/Armageddon & Keith Nut). Come to find out I forgot to label the tapes with the date. Anyway, seems only fitting to post this today on Pun’s birthday. Joe starts the interview (151:40) and plays some joints off his album before introducing everyone to the mic (167:42). I threw on “Broken Language” and Pun set it all off. Other dope moments were the Pumpkinhead, Natural Elements and O.C./Poops promos that Bob started off the night with before Riz got on (10:20) and showed off (see Nas Remix). Bobbito plays a demo set in the middle of the show (113:15) before Terror Squad arrives and then I close it out (179:22). And what would a Stretch & Bobbito show be without comedy from Lord Sear (228:30) For more insight on this Pun appearance check out the movie “Stretch & Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives”.

Big Pun ft. Chris Rivers – Super Lyrical

Monday, November 10th, 2014

chris-rivers-pun-super

Big Pun would have turned 43 today. Unfortunately for the Rap game, this is not the case. In honor of his late father’s birthday, Chris Rivers bumps Black Thought and hops on his dad’s classic cut “Super Lyrical”. Check it out below.

You can further celebrate Pun’s born-day by revisiting our Mixtape Memories piece with DJ Whoo Kid, in which he goes into great detail about the time Pun and a van full of Puerto Ricans kidnapped and pulled an Uzi on him. Good times!

Also, producer Domingo has liberated a full version of a Shaq, Pun, Fat Joe and Easy Mo Bee cut that was originally intended for Shaq’s Can’t Stop The Reign album. It’s been floating around in various levels of quality for a while now, but this is a crisp copy. Listen below.

Video: Big L & Big Pun Freestyle in 1998 (Unreleased)

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

What we have here is some previously unreleased footage of Big L, who would have celebrated his 40th birthday today, participating in a friendly cypher with none other than the late Big Pun and Charlie Hustle. That’s right, two of the all time greats spitting a couple of their iconic verses in each other’s company. Mr. Coleman spits a portion of his “98 Freestyle” and Pun returns the favor with some bars that would eventually end up on “Super Lyrical”.

And that’s not all, hit the jump for an additional clip of L, in the studio with producer Ron Browz, reciting some bars from “Size ‘Em Up”.

Video: Guy Puts Up His Own Big Pun Place Sign

Monday, February 10th, 2014

Some folks go through official channels when they’re trying to get local streets and parks renamed in honor of deceased icons, and some people just break out a ladder and put up their own damn sign. That’s exactly what Shane Rossi did this past Friday in the Bronx to commemorate the passing of Big Pun. Here’s footage of Rossi erecting a Big Pun Place sign on the corner of 163rd Street and Rogers Place, an intersection that Pun’s family and fans have attempted to have renamed for the late MC in the past. Previous attempts have been met with resistance and red tape, so Rossi decided to show some initiative and make shit happen.

Read about how Rossi had the sign made using the NYC Dept. of Transportation’s custom sign program over at ANIMAL.

I also included footage of Jay Shells working on his Rap Quotes project in NY and L.A. after the jump.
