Cipha Sounds Leaves Hot 97

Tuesday, January 27th, 2015

After 17 years, Ciph decides to leave Hot 97.

Official statement below:

Effective immediately, Cipha Sounds is no longer with WQHT HOT 97 FM. Cipha Sounds said, “After 17 years, I’m leaving Hot 97. I’m changing my relationship status from ‘it’s complicated’ to ‘single’. It’s been an amazing ride – from intern to weekends to morning show host to fill Angie’s seat in afternoons. Many years of incredible, life-changing experiences and enough amazing memories to last five lifetimes. The next move is already underway and I promise it’s going to be huge.”

Best wishes to the homie Ciph but I think he’ll be ok. I still need my “weekly” Juan Epstein fix from him & Peter though.

Video: J. Cole Interview with Angie Martinez

Friday, December 12th, 2014

Cole sits down with Angie at Power 105. He talks about his heartfelt performance of “Be Free” on Letterman and the previously unheard verse that he added to it, infusing his music with social awareness, his issues with capitalism, his references to Eminem and Macklemore on the song “Firing Squad” and how they were received by media outlets, Ferguson and more.

Also, I haven’t listened to it yet, but I’ve heard good things about Cole’s hour long sit-down with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Frannie Kelley for NPR’s Microphone Check, which you can stream in full below.

Angie Martinez Resigns From Hot 97

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014

I don’t even know how to respond to this. I can only vaguely recall a time when Angie wasn’t the Voice of New York. Her final show is airing now, stream it here.

Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show ❤️ stay tuned…. Love, angie

UPDATED: A report from Bossip says Angie is headed to Power 105. It’s still unconfirmed but Angie on another station in NYC doesn’t even compute in my brain.

UPDATED: It’s confirmed. Angie will join Power 105.1, taking over the 2-6 PM afternoon slot.

UPDATED: Angie speaks.

“I tried to really look at what’s best for my career, what’s best for my life, what’s best for my family, for me. I had to take my emotion out of it. It was a decision that I felt was right for me”
