Derek Schklar, aka The Devil, returns with his latest project, Violence. It’s a follow up to last year’s Harbinger, which followed a similar format and was later accompanied by an incredibly creative and engrossing short film. These projects aren’t so much mixtapes in the traditional sense as they are stream of consciousness audio books, comprised of an array of vocal samples over hard thumping beats with Rap verses from the likes of featuring Alley Boy, Pesci, Johnny Cash and others sprinkled throughout. It’s a left field approach to Rap music and the result is a highly entertaining 33 minutes of stimulation for your eardrums.

Tree isn’t just one of the most dynamic MCs working in the Chi right now, he’s also one of the standout producers in a city that is currently overflowing with talent. In an effort to spread his Soul Trap sound as widely as possible and put on for his homies at the same time, he’ll be linking with some of his fellow Chicago artists to put out a series of EPs showcasing their music and his production talents. The first project in the series will be the TreeSwag EP from the New Deal Crew’s Chris Crack. You may recognize Crack’s name from his previous work with Tree, as well as the special Chi-Town edition of Heavy Rotation that we did with the big homie. Check out the first leak from the EP below and look out for it to drop on May 1st.
The Silk Shirt Ambassador and Buckwild liberate the first release from their upcoming Silk Pyramids project, which will be out May 27th on Thrice Records.
