Last week, Def Jam and 4mm Games latest Hip-Hop inspired title, Def Jam Rapstar, hit stores for Playstation 3, XBOX and Nintendo Wii. The game is basically a new, “urban” take on the karaoke game genre, but with cool features like the ability to record video of yourself spitting over some of the included beats and upload them directly to your various social networks. So in conjunction with Def Jam Rapstar’s release Complex has recruited myself, Miss Info and DJ Vlad to serve as judges for the just launched Raise The Mic contest. In order to enter you’ll need to grab a copy of the game, if you don’t already have it, and register yourself with the Def Jam Rapstar online community (you must be at least 13 years old to enter).
Once that’s done, fire up your console’s webcam and record your own rendition of one of the classic tracks included in the game, or simply spit your own lyrics over one of the instrumentals (also included). Then all you have to do is use the game’s built in editing tools to snazz up your submission, name the file “Complex” and upload it to the community by November 12th. Myself, Info and Vlad will view the submissions and rate them based on Swagger (I know, I didn’t make the rules), Lyrics, and Overall Video Quality. I’ll tell you right now, you’re better off spitting some original bars over one of these beats then trying to remake a classic. And as far as I’m concerned, if you want to impress me, you’d better come with some lyrics. Swagger will only get you so far with eskay.
Only 16 submissions will be selected for the contest, so you’d better bring it on your first try. A winner will be selected towards the end of the month and will receive a prize package that includes:
• Dress Like a Star: Custom Def Jam Rapstar Sneakers
• Rap Like a Star: A pair of customized Def Jam Rapstar microphones for your game console
• Do Biz Like a Star: A one-on-one conversation with Kevin Liles, President and CEO of Def Jam Enterprises
