Skyzoo & Torae – Barrel Brothers (Artwork & Tracklist)

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

On May 27th Skyzoo and Torae will finally release their long awaited Barrel Brothers collaborative project. This one has been in the works for quite sometime, but the wait is nearly over.

Says Sky:

“To me, this was the perfect way to exercise a little bit, run a nice full court pick up game so to speak, and remind my fans, followers, and critics alike that even though I’m known for my storytelling and song cohesion with my albums, I can still take it back to the corner and go bar for bar at any given moment” says Skyzoo. “The era of the Clue tapes, the Funk Flex radio freestyles, the full on “man to man” ciphers, this project is Torae and I giving the people that side of us. It’s the side of us that we first got our name up on as rookies on the rise. That side is back for a good 14 songs, before we individually get back to our regularly scheduled programs. Personally, if I’m gonna shoot jumpers all day with anyone, its gonna be with my brother Torae”.

Barrel Brothers will feature verses and production contributions from Sean Price, Guilty Simpson, Blu, DJ Premier, Apollo Brown, Black Milk, !llmind, Oh No and others. Hit the jump for the full tracklist and production credits.

Jay-Z Covers New York Magazine

Monday, March 24th, 2014

New York Magazine gives Jay-Z the cover of their special “100 Years of Pop Music in New York” issue via a choice throwback portrait. In conjunction with the issue, they’ve added their Encyclopedia of New York Pop Music to their site. I haven’t had a chance to dig through that yet, but I did read Jody Rosen’s essay on the history of popular music in New York City last night and it was pretty great.

You should also check out their spread of 26 Musicians Who Shaped New York City, which incluses portraits of Nas, Afrika Bambaataa, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige and Grandmaster flash.

UPDATED: Rob Markman spoke to Edwin “PHADE” Sacasa, one of the co-founders of NYC’s legendary Shirt Kings brand and the photographer behind that picture. It turns out that it was taken during Sacasa’s birthday party at the Jamaica Colosseum Mall in Queens back in 1987. Jay was 17 years old. Read the full story here.
