What we have here is some previously unreleased footage of Big L, who would have celebrated his 40th birthday today, participating in a friendly cypher with none other than the late Big Pun and Charlie Hustle. That’s right, two of the all time greats spitting a couple of their iconic verses in each other’s company. Mr. Coleman spits a portion of his “98 Freestyle” and Pun returns the favor with some bars that would eventually end up on “Super Lyrical”.

And that’s not all, hit the jump for an additional clip of L, in the studio with producer Ron Browz, reciting some bars from “Size ‘Em Up”.

In The Lab with Meyhem Lauren & Buckwild

Friday, May 30th, 2014

One of the coolest things about the modern music landscape, as shaped by affordable recording technology and the internet, is the proliferation of these one producer, auteur style albums over the last few years. It is certainly not a new concept, but now it seems like we’re getting projects that might have never happened 15 or 20 years ago on a monthly basis. While it’s entirely possible that we still would have heard an Action Bronson album produced entirely by Harry Fraud, or a Willie The Kid project helmed solely by Alchemist, the ease with which these artists can connect, record and distribute their work has undoubtedly played a huge role in reinvigorating the underground.

If you would have asked me what producer I’d like to see Meyhem Lauren lock in the studio with for a full project, I probably would’ve thrown out the names of some of the younger guys doing their thing at the moment, and I don’t know that Buckwild would have even crossed my mind. Luckily for us, they made that connection on their own and the result is Silk Pyramids, 13 tracks of some of Meyhem’s best work to date. For our latest installment of our In The Lab studio series, we caught up with Mey and Buck to find out how the joint project came about. They schooled us on their respective writing and beatmaking processes, Buck’s studio setup, how they found their shared groove and much more.

As a bonus, we asked Buckwild about his experiences recording with Biggie, Jay-Z and Nas, and he even explained how the “recap” outro to Big’s “I Got A Story To Tell” came about.
