I was a 16-year old junior in high school in 1994 and I was in the prime of a passionate but largely unproductive graffiti career. By then my nuts had dropped and I was running around the streets of Yonkers and New York City looking for trouble to get into. Plus I was fucking, bitches wasn’t my homegirls now. And Rap music was my life. And what a year it was for Rap music.
It’s probably a safe bet that the internet will soon be flooded with an abundance of retrospectives and lists celebrating the many classic LPs that arrived that year, and rightfully so. But for our latest compilation of classics we wanted to look at a specific category of music that was thriving at the time: The Rap Remix.
Every artist worth their salt was dropping remixes to cuts that were already fan favorites, but unlike many of the throwaway remakes that we get today, most of those new takes were as good as, or even better than, the originals. We put together a nice collection of standouts from 1994 that still shine after 20 years.
