Twelve Reasons to Die debuted at #27 on the Billboard 200 selling 15,000 copies in its first week. In its second week the album sold 4,600 more copies. In its third week the album sold 3,000 more copies bringing its total to 23,000.
This album is a fucking CLASSIC. And this is the thanks it gets?
No one can simulate a visual this extreme that holds interest throughout the entire album like Ghost did with this joint.
This album was some cinematic shit. You literally had a movie playing in your head listening to this. Biting your nails and championing Starks throughout. You felt some kinda way when shorty set him up, and when he died. You wyled out when he resurrected and became Ghostface Killlah, the supernatural heroic villain and exacted revenge.
He had on point character studies on all the cast members. The story line started with his rise, his fall, and him branching out and becoming kingpin of the underworld.
I was going to be slick and say the reason it didn’t sell is because it was art. But it didn’t sell because it would require a different type of album consumption.
This is an album. It’s like Van Morrison Astral Weeks. It’s a complete work of art. Be thankful that some people still have vision.
Did you check out the comic?
“As if the Ghostface x Adrian Younge 12 Reasons to Die album wasn’t enough to entertain the shit out of us. The 12 Reasons To Die comic book is about to come out now as well (as you know). What you may not know is how it was put together, well let this mini documentary clear that up to you. GFK speaks on his love for comics (Ironman specifically, obviously) and how creating this comic has always been a dream of his. The video details the books creation, the risks that were taken, the development of the GFK character, and more with insight from GFK, Adrain, producer Matt Pizzolo, writers Matthew Rosenberg and Patrick Kindlon, and more. While I haven’t read this comic book yet, it seems to be a MUCH better look than the Wu comic books that dropped right after Wu-Tang Forever that were, to be blunt, very poorly done and simply pandering to the obvious Wu-Tang-Superhero parallels. The 12 Reasons To Die bundle (with issues 1-6) will be out May 29th”
“Black Republican”…”Success”… “Do It For Hip-Hop”… What do all these joints got in common other than the fact that they all some Jay/Nas collabs that had some crazy beats for ni**as to body? ANSWER…Nas basically steals the show on all those tracks. Now as a muthafucka who feels like I gotta explain to ni**as WHY “Takeover” is better than “Ether” damn near 2 to 3 times a week n why Jay is in my opinion the slightly more superior artist…that aint no easy shit to admit for the gawd. But I always keep shit 1,000,000 HUNNA wit ni**as…n I feel like I gotta speak honestly on this shit too. Basically I think Hov went into this shit thinkin AW MAN I REALLY WANNA HEAR NAS SPIT ON THIS PICASSO BABY OR HEAVEN BEAT BUT THERES A GOOD CHANCE HE GON BODY THOSE TRACKS…LEMME JUS THROW SON ON TOP OF THIS CORNY ASS PHARRELL JOINT THAT SOUNDS LIKE IT DROPPED AT THE HEIGHT OF THE NEPTUNES REIGN IN LIKE ’01…ESCO CANT ROCK ON EM JOINTS LIKE I CAN HOMIE…n gave hisself the advantage. Basically ANY beat on this album woulda suited Nas more than this shit yo. Bruh this shit got Timbaland AND Swizzy voices on it… Yall already kno how I feel bout em two dudes n how they vocals on records is like sprinklin onions on ice cream. Its like Im aware that this shit is straight basura yo…but for some reason I aint eem mad at it. Maybe I jus appreciate the fact that Timbo n Swizzy actually kept they damn mouths shut for this long too.
