This is Big Money Talk, Can You Answer Me?

News of Jay-Z’s new LP, Magna Carta Holy Grail, hit the wire last night and with the announcement came the revelation from the Wall Street Journal that Samsung paid $5 a pop for 1 million copies of the album to give away 3 days early to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users. This is of course a huge win for Jay, as the album has already brought in at least $5 million in revenue and it hasn’t even gone on sale yet.

Corporate sponsorship of albums is not a new concept, but I don’t believe it’s ever been done on this scale. The Jay x Samsung rollout is essentially the Green Label Sound model on steroids. Samsung wins through their mere association with the biggest Rapper in the world and Jay pockets a nice check plus enjoys a subsidized global marketing push. The only people who lose here are of course us iPhone users, but I’m guessing we’ll all have a copy of Magna Carta within an hour of it hitting the Samsung App. And if the album has already turned a profit, I’m thinking neither Jay nor the label will even care.

The unique elements of this campaign have of course prompted several questions about how this whole thing is going to work. Will the 1 million albums Samsung purchased count towards the LP’s Billboard placement? (I don’t see why they wouldn’t). Does this mean Jay will be the first artist ever to go platinum prior to their album release date? (I think it might).

Has Jay sold out? Is selling out in Hip-Hop even still a thing?

People don’t always love when art is so closely tied to commerce. A-Trak wasn’t impressed by the TV spot. And I get that. But you know if Jay is gonna step outside the box, at the level he’s operating on, you have to expect that he’s gonna be looking for a big corporate check. And with big corporate checks come slick ad campaigns and branding. One thing is for sure: Jay does shit, and other people follow, so get ready to see more of these types of deals in the near future with artists and sponsors big and small.

But to say “I be seeing dicks in the shower looking like pussy”, dat right deere is some confused individual type shit.

Q-Tip homeboy in Prison Song “they took the weights, what we gon’ do?” type shit…predatory.

  35. spirit equality Says:

Not sure many rappers could follow this, even if they wanted to (corporate America only has a handful of rappers they would even mess with). Only person I could see being able to follow this is someone squeaky clean (and with sales history) like Mackelmore. Or a non-rapper (Beyonce comes immediately to mind, for obvious reasons).

On a much smaller scale, The Roots might be able to pull it off (because they are a respected brand, but the numbers would be way lower because their sales history is way lower).

Prince had a similar set-up where everyone who bought a concert ticket got a free copy of his new album (did Billboard count the sales? I can’t remember).

I don’t think Billboard will count these Samsung sales for Jay, but he’ll get the money and will likely still go on to sell another 500k, if the album is well received (Jay has a lot of older fans who are going to prefer a physical CD, regardless).

^ I wouldn’t say that working strictly with American companies is what Jay-Z represents. His last album was distributed by Sony, a Japanese company. Universal was owned by a French company (Vivendi) while Jay was President of Def Jam. Jay is a global artist, you can’t seriously expect him to partner only with domestic American companies. Sony/BMG and Vivendi Universal control most of the music industry, if Jay only worked with American companies, his ability to navigate the music industry would be pretty sharply limited.
