Yasiin Bey & Preservation – The REcstatic (Remix Album)

As promised, DJ Preservation drops his reworking of Yasiin Bey’s 2009 LP The Ecstatic. Preservation, who serves as Bey’s tour DJ, went back to the original sample sources for the LP and grabbed alternate samples and also mixed in some new pieces from elsewhere to create his interpretation of the project.

He told OKP about The REcstatic:

“The project started as a slow build with a few songs and then it become a challenge to do them all. Because it was a sample-based album, I wanted to keep the remixes sample-based and for them to have the same pitch, key and tone as the originals. The original beats were non-traditional and the amount of singing made it very difficult to remix with this intention of the same energy. It’s the result of countless hours of digging through records to sample, constructing the beat, wrapping it around the vocal, adjusting the tempo, and so on. ‘Quiet Dog Bite Hard’ was exciting because I was remixing my own track and it drew me into the process, and ‘Workers Comp’ was the most unique due to its complex time signature.”

Look out for Preservation’s Old Numbers LP to drop on July 9th with appearances from Yasiin, Jean Grae, Ed O.G. and others.

Here’s the thing, I don’t fault any rapper for chasing his dream, 30K a year to perform is the life.

However I don’t fault a man that chooses to chase corporate paper either.

It’s “said” that we live in a post-racist society, and while we may be seeing it’s effects in the infant stage, there’s STILL remnants of a time from the past.

So when it comes to African-Americans I say chase that rap paper, but be about your business as well.

We used to have people like Russell Simmons, Dame Dash and Diddy making sure that boardroom money was equally distributed.

NOW? Facebook, Twitter, WordPress and Youtube …and a torrent copy of Fruity Loops and Pro-Tools got people thinking they can be their own boss.

No being properly educated in this game is what has these rappers with platinum singles but still on foodstamps looking foolish.

Learn to trust your BROTHER, just cause he’s black and wearing a suit doesn’t means he’s not on his A game. And just because he’s NOT wearing a suit doesn’t mean he ain’t on Goldman Sach’s ass.

This is what Nas means when he says “Hip-Hop” is dead …all acceptance ain’t good acceptance. And brothers ain’t bad brothers because he don’t walk the same path as you.

To turn and idea…to an tangible business and take it as far as i can take it then cash out

Then i can opt out knowing i can solve the puzzle…i can figure the puzzle out

    Anythjng else is failure

Dame Dash may be on the berge of bankruptcy but he can die a happy man

  20. Casket Face Says:

I know cats won’t believe me but I spent 10K on investing in my craft and passion 2 months ago, and all though I have nothing to show for it RIGHT NOW. I feel it was the best decision I made in my life.

…follow your dreams, you only life once and if you live your life trying to prove to others your worth you will LOSE. If they can’t see your worth then why are you trying to prove it to them? They wouldn’t even know what to do with it if they had it.

I’ve seen many people of “respect” turn out to be NOTHING off the sort, and I’ve seen people who’ve been counted out rise through the ranks right up under the non believers noses.

At the end of the day do you and go hard. Fuck everyone else’s input.

  21. Free J Says:

I kno there’s nothing new said rappin but it’s how u say it, words used, images etc. I really think I’m on to something wit this concept cd. Some ppl gonna hate. It won’t be for everyone but it’s well rounded and innovative jus watch.

Plus I don’t kno how many succesful rappers came from a druggie military aspect. Jus watch.

  22. hood trill stunting aka trap day man Says:

Lol niggas believe he really got 12k

    > for me it’s not so much the belief as it is the context of the comment via the character of the SN.

if i were blessed with 12k right this moment…i’m thinking about either saving or spending. not asking a bunch of strangers who could care less about my life what to do with it. thas what family, friends & trusted associates are for.

it’s like blandon has no outlet to convey hope & success. kinda tragic.

My last performance was in 93 down the block from the russian tea room.I met Billy Joel that night. My son was in the womb and my BM was in the crowd.

My crew “The Hybrids” ripped shit down “Elbow Room” was the song.

I knew it was over for me that night as a rapper. It felt good being on stage but I had responsibilities.
