I only say that because those I feel we’re more than albums trying to make dollars. Those were Hov’s greatest teaching points.
Them shits were frescos of what made him, him. And what the cesspool of the hood breeds if given the proper circumstance.
I can play those pieces as one song, straight through and feel like I can still pull out a fresh GEM to abide by for a while.

Chicago rap star Chief Keef was locked up Tuesday afternoon for violating his probation from a 2011 gun charge.
The 17-year-old rapper, whose real name is Keith Cozart, was taken into custody during a hearing in Juvenile Court in Chicago. A hearing on his sentence will be held Thursday.
Cook County Juvenile Court Judge Carl Anthony Walker said Chief Keef exhibited a “clear disregard for the court’s authority” in appearing with a gun during an interview with Pitchfork.com.

Are we really gone compare Hola Hovito, Jigga Jigga, That Nigga Jigga, Renegade and the likes of all that popish shit to the lessons of Where I’m From, A Million And One Questions/Rhyme No More etc!?!?!?!?

Blueprint is just as gem laden as RD but it’s a more relaxed vibe. The consequences aren’t as heavy, not as much is at stake.
But the production & diversity in content is what pushes it a notch beyond most of Jay’s other work.
“Izzo”, “Girls, Girls, Girls”, “U Don’t Know”, “Heart of the City (Ain’t No Love)”, “Never Change”, “Song Cry”….these are all great SONGS that balance the street with the mainstream without conceding too much to either.

Nah, this is where we differ. I see the point you make and you outline it so perfectly. But the Hov that wasn’t so shiny and “big brotherish” is the best Hov.
Blueprint Hov is Hov being the big brother trying to introduce to new shit and the one you look up to because he got everything you want and moving how you wish to move when you grow up.
But that old Hov is the Hov that wasn’t a big brother. He was that nigga that you meet up with in division the first day of HS and y’all don’t even speak. Y’all just nod ya heads toward one another because that look of understanding is only recognized by other niggas with understanding.
That was Hov not being a big brother as much as it was the nigga that passed the Backwood your way and y’all build it out in a cloud of smoke.
January 15th, 2013 at 6:47 pm
The Blueprint has some great fucking songs tho.
Some of the best songs of Hov’s career.
His artistry was in full swing there.
He wasn’t trying to show you the streets or show you D’evils.
We been there, done that.
He was trying to make a great piece of music.
January 15th, 2013 at 6:52 pm
Reasonable Doubt Hov is my favorite. The nigga with one foot in the booth & the other on the block.
But Blueprint Hov is the one that set his sights on making a billy. Blueprint Hov is the one who figured out a way to become a part of Pop culture, who endeared himself to big business & white America & became every soccer mom’s favorite rapper.
He crossed over without crossing over. And he’s still here.
That guy deserves props too.

January 15th, 2013 at 6:57 pm
LOL.
I don’t see it that way Amp. Reasonable Doubt Hov was the mind that created Vol. 2 & 3 Hov. It was Vol 2 & 3 Hov seeing how big HKL was when the light bulb went off and he had his Edison moment for BP Hov.
Vol. 2 & 3 Hov put the eyes on a Billy. And so it spawned the BP mindframe and never looked back.
No days off…. FARRIS BEULLER!!!!

To the Hip-Hop community. But I don’t think he transcended rap until that Blueprint album. Remember the “Izzo” performance at the MTV Awards in Lincoln Center? Jay-Z had sorta peaked with Vol. 2. Vol. 3 had hits but there wasn’t much progression from him as an MC. The Blueprint offered the most well rounded version of Jay-Z we’d seen up to that point.
“Song Cry” is the first love song of Jay-Z’s career. It’s a song of love lost but it’s the first time he stepped out of Iceberg Slim mode. Blueprint was the growth of Jiggaman.
January 15th, 2013 at 7:02 pm
Vol. 3 was the follow up to Vol. 2. It wasn’t as popular as the last one so Hov decided to change it up & go back to his Reasonable Doubt roots.
The Blueprint is Reasonable Doubt Vol. 2. It’s the album that set of the 2nd phase of his career.
And The Blueprint is without question a classic.
Again, true classics change the direction the genre was heading in. The Blueprint did that.

I forgot the Dynasty LP. And it’s true, the more soulful, reflective tone of that album obviously influenced BP.
Blueprint is closest to RD in terms of theme, sound & content. It’s a certified classic, even with the bullshit.

Amp, you talking commercial appeal. Commercialism never appreciated that rugged and raw like that.
Jay sensed that, and moved accordingly. It’s really not deeper than that. He dumbed his flow to double his dollars. He said that. He did that.
The man was like, “oh, you want me to be emotional? Ok ok… I’ll try to be. Imma do it like this… ‘I can’t see it coming down my eyes..’”
He knew what he was doing and it was all controlled. I suspect he knew we knew that too. That’s what he had Beans and nem for. To carry on tradition while he go make them dollars. But he gave them fuck ups too much credit. Or he was that big of a personality that he enhanced them but was too trusting to know he did that.
Just my opinion man.
You really think he wanna vibe with Elton John and nem? Lol. K.

Nah,
Untitled went over a lot of people's heads with the lyricism and the points of topic is something that makes you lend a hand to the past. That project was geared with a theme that kept pace through and through.
That album may be a slept on classic.
Queens get the Money
Project Roach
You Can't Stop Us Now
Fried Chicken
Sly Fox
Y'all My Niggas
America
Testify
The shit he was saying on that album was something you couldn't pay other rappers to say or even the topics were things that most care not to ingest. Like, history, Fox being strictly for rednecks and out of touch gatekeepers, Ivan van Certima, Gil Scott Heron…
You have to know his points of reference to appreciate that album or its objective.

Nastradamus the bootleg version>>>>>>>Nastradamus the retail version…..and I’m a loyal Nas fan….The street versions of I Am and Nastradamus were way better than the ones that made the store shelf…..If you ever heard that Death of Escobar tape then you know what I’m talmbout’……Jay n’ Nas the Mount Olympus of Hip Hop….You can’t go wrong w/ liking each or both….The worst album in their discography is STILL technically better than sum of these new artists debuts….My #2Cents….Niggaz still argue Biggie, Jay, Nas, or Pac….? C’mon niggaz is cemented in the game….Nothing can tarnish they musical legacies at this point…..Niggaz better off arguing bout sum of these early 00′s niggaz and where they stand on the Hip Hop totem pole……

Agree with most of this,(Q) but what is the most paraded part of that song? (A) Alicia Keys belting out “NEEEEEEWWWW YOOOOOORRKKK! Something something something are made of!!”
She made that song as well as the video. I don’t think people really paid that much attention to Jay’s lyrics that much.
It was glitzy, it was glossy, it had a dope vid and a scorching ass chick on the hook.
^^
“I’ve become a wet dream tomato” is the part you’re missing.
Yeah Hov wasnt in rare form on that song, but it gave him something he needed, a massive hit and a damn good one at that. Its basically the only good reason for BP3s existence.

‘Ye is 3 classics deep right now (Dropout, Late Reg, Dark Twisted Fantasy), you could argue on Graduation’s classic status and 808′s and Heartbreak, while not a classic, is hugely influential.

Death of Escobar
^
I’m still trying to find that intro where NaS is outside of Heaven’s gates and he’s begging to get in, but God won’t let him. That’s the ONLY track I’m missing off the whole 22 track version I had when I was 15.
You know the one. He’s like “please man. I KNOW you hear me talking to you. Let a nigga in”

The TRUTH aint for LIARS…T.I., Kanye, Wayne, Jeezy, 50, Cam & Dipset, Game…..Those type of niggaz should be up for debate….Regardless if you like or dislike ‘em them 5-6 Lp’s in…..Jay n’ Nas on they 12-14th studio album….jus’ sayin’….

The bootleg version of Nastradamus had way more Swizz Beatz production then Dame Grease on it….Couple of tracks that made the Lost Tapes album was on it….Blaze a 50, and the OG version of Project Windows….Death of Escobar was a mixture of joints that aint made I Am and Nastradamus…..Belly Button Window…Gangsta Tears….Wanna Play Ruff….buncha other joints that were crazier than what actually made the retail version….The raps on the retail Nastradamus are 100% crack….just them beats were’nt clicking….Dame Grease n Nas are hit or miss when they work together…

First time I was in Soho at a sneaker shop and dude was like …”yo you got some orange shorts?” I was what? He was like you from Detroit right? I’m like mannnnnn…same thing he like your name Casket Face.
Both of them dudes was like 21-23. I never intened for the Casket Face mask to exist for that long. I’m cool with it though.
