Toronto police helped uncover a murder-suicide plot in Arizona that led to the Thursday morning arrest of a 16-year-old girl who posted a YouTube video threatening to kill herself after gunning down her high school classmates
On a video posted on a YouTube Toronto transgender channel, the teen, who attends Red Mountain High School, said she is “somewhat accidentally planning to blow up the school.”
“I now literally have a plan of seriously hurting … killing … murdering people in my high school,” she said in the video.
The channel owner reportedly contacted Toronto police, who in turn tracked the girl’s location to an area near Mesa, 32 kilometres away from the Arizona state capital.
Toronto police alerted the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to the threat Wednesday night.
U.S. detectives visited the girl home’s where she told them of her plans to “cut the wires to security carts” to slow down response and plans to shoot people from behind a fence.
Police found a semi-automatic .40 calibre handgun, a .357 revolver and a .22 revolver in the teen’s home. The guns had trigger locks and were kept in a gun safe. They were not seized.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was struck by the “bizarre parallels” to the recent Sandy Hook elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn.
However, Arpaio noted the teen planned the attack approximately a week before the deadly Connecticut shooting.
