A Crawford teen arrested Sunday at the Lexington Road Walmart told police he was trying to play Santa for his girlfriend’s children.
Store security guards detained 17-year-old Matthew Dillion Sparks after he pushed a shopping cart filled mostly with toys out the front entrance without paying, Athens-Clarke police said.
Surveillance video footage showed that Sparks watched door greeters and waited until they were too occupied to notice him pushing past with the buggy, according to police.
When officers arrived, the teen explained that he had intended to place the items on layaway, but wanted to leave them in the shopping cart outside the store where no one else would mess with them, and that he was going to go back into the store to buy a drink, police said.
“This did not make any sense to me, since there is no way to put the items on layaway outside the store in the parking lot,” an officer wrote in the arrest report.
The officer also didn’t buy the alleged thief’s story about planning to return to the store to buy a drink.
“I knew Mr. Sparks was not going to purchase any other items because he only had 18 cents on his person,” the officer wrote in his report.
The shopping cart the teen rolled out of Walmart held 18 toys, altogether worth $238, and also shoes, liquid wormer, a suction tube and a fleece jacket, police said.
