Video: Talib Kweli on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations

All of the episodes of the current, and final, season of No Reservations have been piling up on my DVR for the last few weeks because I can’t come to terms with this being the last season and I’m trying to stretch it out as long as possible. In this clip from the show’s final episode, Tony talks gentrification with Kweli in Brooklyn.

“not with that pop shit” = I don’t have what it takes to be a star so I’m content performing in small venues to Caucasian fans for 17 dollars/ticket

    ^

listen, i dont like currensy at all, dunno how he’s lasted this long with that boring ass flow. but i bet he’s turned down allkinds of opportunities to go mainstream/pop. i believe him when he says he’s chosen to keep his shine right where it is.

“Well you know I’m not actually trying to go gold, I actually pull my album off the shelf after it’s sold 35,000 copies – I think the extra sales would dilute my image as an underground/underdog rapper” #ThingsCurrentheeSays

word, might need to check that one out. one thing about books like that though is that its easy for cats to overthink what they read, trying to strategize ways to implement those philosophies into everyday life. seize the day god, internalize the concepts as quickly and fully as possible and begin acting on them. once you make a habit of acting on your thoughts you begin to manifest your own destiny, which truly does bring you closer to god status in this temporal realm of ours.

“Well yes I have had the opportunity to perform at the United Center but I prefer Reggie’s Rock Club – as an artist, performing in front of 512 fans means more intimate contact with those who appreciate my music.”

“I was invited to be on the record with Ross, Jay and Dre – it was actually going to be “4 Kings” – but I decided that the stardom that would result from such a record would have an adverse effect on the quality and earnest nature of my music”

  21. Jackson7 Says:

    twista bodied that shit forreal

  22. big_seth Says:

Bone, Twista, and crucial conflict got heavy spins back then.

  23. Chief Ali Says:

I don’t fuck with Curren$y’s music too tough but I respect that he overstands his limitations. He knows he’s not a star studded, marquee type of artist and that he’s more apt to experience success in the niche he’s created on the fringe of rap fandom. Why set yourself up for failure when you know your lane?

performing at venues that accomodate respectable crowds > trying to do stadium status shit when you know your music doesn’t draw that type of following

Doe or Die’s Greatest Hits LP is actually a reeeeealy dope album.

  29. big_seth Says:

I remember being extremely hype thinking he was signing to the Roc.

  30. Honey Lips Louis Says:

Maaaaaan Do or Die were them niggas.

    Everybody knew their whips.

That was back when Larry Hoover still had the gangbangers on a leash.

You could still take your bitch to Harold’s for a respectable chicken wing dinner in your Lincoln Town Car before blowing her back out at a Motel 6 next to Ford City Mall.

Now the game is all kinds of fucked up. Chicago is so dangerous that there are whole swaths of fucking neighborhoods you couldn’t pay me to even drive thru after sundown.
