Jay Electronica Denies Ghostwriting For Nas

Jay Electronica took to Twitter last night and flat out denied that he ever wrote lyrics for Nas. Well, to be completely accurate he said Nas “never has and never will need a ghostwriter” and I think it’s safe to assume that most resonable people would interpret that as a denial.

stic.man also posted a follow up to the parapraph he posted on Facebook yesterday and in it he specifically addresses dream and her statements and elaborates on his role in the creation of Untitled:

Dream Hampton. I certainly don’t mean to call u a hater. I am just being brought up to speed about your tweet. I heard the “rumors” from other tweets and a few emails from fans. I still haven’t read your tweet. So my statement was just being clear on how I felt about the collab. That was a great opportunity for me to work with one of the most influential emcees to my own personal flow and craft. I can’t speak on what Jay and Nas collab was cause I wasn’t there and that’s there business. Both of those cats are awesome lyricists in my opinion. But for me I was just a white belt that answered the call for a session with a master of the craft. And I assisted where it was requested with ideas, beats and some writing. Not because Nas “needed” me lol…Again I was just honored to get the call. Nas new album Life is Good is lyrically magnificent and his skills have always spoken for them self. So that’s just my view I respect that folks may field different ways about it. Just clarifying my position.

And I referred to it as a “rumor” because obviously no one of the people talking about it were present in the session. So people can sometimes think they know but weren’t present so they speak on what they think as opposed to being there.

“…I assisted where it was requested with ideas, beats and some writing.”

That statement is certainly open to interpretation. We all know alot goes into the creation of an album, and lines and choruses and ideas get contributed from different sources and there’s nothing wrong with that. And stic’s right, none of us were in the studio sessions, so we don’t know how it really went down. So that should be the end of that right?

As a Nas fan and a fan of Hip-Hop, those denials are enough to make me feel better than I felt yesterday about all of this fuckery. But as a realist, I would hope that one of these Hip-Hop “journalists” is going to look into this further. The reality is, there’s a million reasons (legal, political, financial) that Jay and stic would deny ghostwriting and I’m having trouble coming up with even one good reason why they would publicly admit to it. And not for nothing, but these are serious allegations coming from a couple of people who have in the past proven themselves to be credible. You don’t just throw around these kind of accusations about one of the best MCs ever if there’s nothing at all to it, right?

The last thing that we, as fans, want to believe is that one of the greatest ever used a ghostwriter so when Jay and stic say they didn’t write for him, we want that to be the end of it. The probelm is, that most of the people who are supposed to question this shit (bloggers, writers, magazine editors) are also dickriders fans and they’re more than happy to take whatever denial somebody offers as gospel. Particularly in this era of the internet there’s been an unfortunate tendency to suck dick first and ask questions later, if at all.

Let’s keep it all the way real, niggas were posting that clip from the Big Boy show yesterday as if that was concrete evidence that nobody ever wrote for Nas. “Oh, well if Nas says he didn’t use ghostwriters than that’s the end of that”. Except that’s not the end of that, because of course he would deny it on live radio, who wouldn’t? Nevermind that the interview clip was uploaded to the internet days before dream sent out her infamous tweet.

Personally, since this shit is out there now, I’d like some more information. This is Nas we’re talking about here. Is anybody going to look into this shit and get to the bottom of what dream claims she heard and what fwmj says he was told, or are we all just going to accept shit at face value? If both of them are lying, or misrepresenting what they know, or just plain wrong, then that will come out and Nas will be vindicated. On the other hand, if Electronica wrote “Queens Get The Money”, then the world will have the facts and at that point we can debate what it means to The Little Homie’s legacy. Either way, there’s more to this story and I’d like to hear it.

UPDATE: stic.man goes into explicit detail with VIBE about him and M1′s role in the creation of “Sly Fox” and “We Are Not Alone”. This is really the kind of clarification I was looking for on the topic.

sorry, but i’m not so blinded by the aura of Nas that I’m just gonna write that shit off without an explanation.

i give the Little Homie the benefit of the doubt, and in my heart I don’t think he ever used ghostwriters for verses, but still, get off his dick acting like it’s not possible.

If we were talking about Hov, then yeah. But, in the era of Nas v. Jay, she’s chosen sides. She writes entire books for the guy, for Jehovah’s sakes. She’s practically a minister of propaganda for the nazi regime, if you will. And two of the “Jews” she so vehemently damned have come out and denied her allegations.

    And she’s a broad.

^stfu post music and moderate masks nigga.

  29. Cinsere Says:

Since it seems like eskay is actually responding to these comments, let me drop my 2 cents.

While there are stans, and there are haters, they’re both pretty extreme terms that, the vast majority of the time, people use hastily when they are not willing to either a) dig deeper behind the thought process of the other’s opinions, or b) admit their own bullheaded stance has forced the other to be defensive. I think this instance is an example of the latter.

Eskay, you can’t sit there behind your keyboard and act like your constant name-calling, condescending tone, and sometimes blatant disrespect on damn near every Nas-related post goes unnoticed. There’s also the subtle shit, like when Complex posted a “Worst Songs” list for both Nas and Hov, but somehow you only put up the Nas link in your Lite section. And now you’re going dumb hard over some unsubstantiated rumors, niggaz come to Nas’s defense (cuz, honestly, you’re sound more and more like you have a vendetta against the man), and the best you can do is call niggaz Stans?! C’mon man. Just admit you don’t like the dude and get it over with. But don’t say shit like “as a Nas fan…” cuz that just sounds crazy coming from you.

  30. NovemberEnd Says:

If your gonna make such claims that would alter and/or destroy someone’s artistic reputation, then you gotta have more than a phone conversation from 5 years old. or alleged reference tracks you heard.

Dream and FWMJ had the nerve to be upset no one believes them.

Then turn around and use the “I’m not a journalist card”

Why the fuck are you mad that people think you’re full of shit?

Not saying it’s impossible, only reckless to just throw that out there leisurely w/ nothing else to back up your word with.

  31. H Says:

Word up Eskay.. post content n STFU. Did this nigga Nas diss you at a concert or something? Didn’t shake your hand? There hasnt been one Nas post where u dont add your 2 cents. ” Little Homie this” Little Homie that”.

Whats the problem bro? You come off a little too salty when it comes down to Nas. You ain’t low nigga we see lol…

  32. AFGun Says:

calm down dawg.. its not the end of the world. there are bigger issues to get worked up over than this petty shit

  33. JD Says:

Why keep pushing this baseless rumor. Dream Hampton is just salty because someone questioned whether or not Jay-z would ever create a conscious album. But instead of saying no, she took a shot Nas whiteout any proof, and some other bipolar dude claiming the same shit with no merit. This is low dude, you can’t keep making up stuff and trying your hardest to read between the lines when there’s nothing. Did you know Nas personally? Cause I don’t understand why you keep referring to him as “lil homie.” Keep this shit professional and 100%…. And stop hating on a true living Legend!!!!

  34. Monstadon Says:

I’m pretty disappointed that anyone ran with this to begin with, especially HERE on this site. I’m not gonna waste time disparaging any of the people involved (one person’s measure of credibility CLEARLY is different from others in that regard and further, true standards held by professionals). However, I will say this…it seems like every time someone, anyone really, not just Nas, is moving in a good direction, we seem to revel and take joy in tearing them down.

Despite protestations to the contrary, even beyond the denials of the 2 collaborators involved…the common knowledge of how albums and songs are created…and just using common sense and your ears…I really can’t find a good reason this entire episode is even deemed newsworthy. What’s really sad…is that even if it were true, (which makes even less sense given what was claimed), we’re not talking about a bunch of albums…we’re speaking on a few songs from ONE album…and people are leaping to judgement about a whole career. Only on the internet does this type of logic flourish. Life is multi-dimensional. People need to adjust their thinking to be more in line with reality, and not the comic book/high school mentality we keep holding on to, the useless ideals people expect from others while not coming close to living up to themselves. It keeps all of us and the culture as a whole from really progressing.

It’s really a shame, and a sad indictment of the environment these types of things thrive in. Truthfully, things like this can backfire on those that perpetrate them as well, damaging their brand, and creating animosity for selfish and stupid reasons. In the quest to tarnish one person’s credibility, I would advise the accusers to mind that they are in danger of losing their own credibility…something that is hard to earn back once it’s lost, and in very short supply on this thing we call the internet. Be careful where you throw those stones.

    100.

  35. Cinsere Says:

You sure bro? I don’t know… I’m sure you can find a way to drag this out longer.
