Young Jeezy Named Sr. VP of A&R at Atlantic?
Anybody else scratching their head over this? Appointing rappers to figurehead executive positions? I thought we were off that? When you see a headline like this you have to say to yourself: What has Young Jeezy ever done to demonstrate that he’s executive material? I guess you could say, well he has experience running a drug distribution organization, but I’m thinking that if he was really as good at that as he’d have us believe, he would’ve been indicted years ago.
And don’t they usually give these positions to rappers who are at the top of their game? No shots at Jeezy but this is hardly the peak of his career. The only rational explanation I can come up with is that Atlantic wants to sign him as an artist when his Def Jam contract expires, so they sweetened the pot with this title and position. I guess you can’t be mad at that, right?
Jeezy’s gonna get a nice cushy office in New York, a sweet compensation package and he’ll get to rape that executive expense budget. Good for him. But does handing out these positions to just anybody diminsh the role of the A&R exec? How is that role even defined in this age of overnight Youtube stars and 360 deals? You know who else once held the position of VP of A&R at Atlantic? Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder of the company and one of the most legendary record business figures ever. You think his corpse is doing donuts right now?
