I think Bastard and Earl, and Frank Ocean’s project are much stronger than Goblin, or any of the mixtapes that the weed carriers have released in the past 6-8 months. Along with Earl’s absence, the TV show, the pop-up store it just seems like they haven’t really been concentrating fully on making good music. Maybe Frank Ocean will put the squad on his back, I just don’t seem them making much musical/artistic progress without Earl. Their live show still looks crazy and I can’t hate on them for taking these white kids’ money. So I say fell off… not completely but certainly the ceiling doesn’t seem as high as in ’10. I still like them though fwiw.

Wiz signed to Atlantic same as Lupe and Bob. Atlantic has been churching out Hip-Pop for the past few years and ranking in millions doing it. Bob, Lupe and Wiz albums were full of crossover attempts and pop rap but that doesn’t mean they fell of artistically. Rap artist understand pop sells so their albums have pop-ish songs while the their mix tapes contain the real hip-hop shit.
Jesus by Lupe was ok, but Cabin Fever was great. Listen to Cabin fever and tell me Wiz fell off, musically…Nope he hasn’t just making money…

I like most other onlookers ignore the weed carriers. You really shouldn’t consider their music worth analyzing or grouping with Earl, Tyler and Frank’s music. But Mike G can flow and Syd’s R&B tape was ok. Ignoring the other cats of odd futures musical output, their potential is still high and current releases are proper. Bastard was slightly better than Goblin because that record resonates with the inner anger people harbor. Comparing it to Goblin tho isn’t quite fair because Tyler wasn’t the weird ass kid he once was. Goblin is a decent sophomore effort, only faults it has is that it is to long. but the point is their current work is of the same quality as their older stuff. Making money won’t keep them from making good music. If you think earl is the OF engine of creativity be worried because dude may be brain washed to much by those damn samoans…

I disagree. It was his choice to sign with Atlantic. He had a meteoric rise with homegrown producers like Sledgren and Big Germ and a personal brand that meshed with his sound. The fact that he jettisoned both to basically turn into B.O.B. 2.0 is in my eyes the definition of falling off. The irony of his situation was that he was unimpeachably cool, just doing what he loved and making 100k a year from it. Now he makes millions and is viewed as a simp. I’ll add also that Cabin Fever was an amalgamation of shit that pre-dated Rolling Papers and it’s against the odds that he can recover on a street level from being Mr. “I rolllll up.” The nigga had limited lyrical/musical ability in the first place. Niggas (B.O.B & Wiz) will Nelly themselves for this money; making some concessions for commerciality is one thing, but at the end there is only so much you can do before people forget why they liked you in the first place.

I’d say the production doesn’t come close to anything on Bastard, AssMilk, French, Seven, and VCR/Wheels, sound like nothing out of Cali. I thought the beats on Goblin, sound less inspired, that’s just me. I personally think both records seem equally violent/angry. And for the record the boy Sweatshirt didn’t lie when he said, “Earl’s half the reason the reviews are fantastic.”

Not concessions just making music for a different audiences. Get a job and if you already have one you must understand the value of money. So I get Wiz making roll up for the millions of white girls who buy it off of iTunes. Going pop isn’t a big deal nor doesn’t mean an artist has fallen off or can’t make good music anymore.

I mean, Nelly is rich too but its undeniable that he fell the fuck off. N I’m not a new fan. I was rocking with Wiz back in undergrad. I got into his music shortly before the Curren$y co-sign. So I’ve heard nearly all of his musical output. And the shit he has made since Cabin Fever is fucking garbage. Your point about him needing to go commercial to sell records is bullshit. Mac Miller took the same producers and sold 150k, indy. Facts are facts, the nigga was Cory Gunz without rapping ability before he turned into a stoner/hypebest rapper, got buzz and now he is about as mainstream as Nelly.
