DOOMSTARKS (Ghostface Killah x MF Doom) – Victory Lap (Madlib Remix) (Radio Rip)
FINALLY, we get some evidence that the Ghost x DOOM project actually exists. Rosenberg debuted this cut on his show last night, but it will be available for purchase on iTunes later in the month, and more interstingly, will be available on the limited edition red casette tape that you see up top. That’s right, a cassette tape. No word on whether or not it will include operational instructions for the uninitiated.

Why do you think most new artists come in with one or two producers– those dudes give the artists the beats for free hoping to be there if the artist gets big.

From an artistic standpoint, I kinda like this shit. That said, I feel for the producers that have to give work away on some potential type shit. But I’ll be damned if it doesn’t make for more cohesive projects.

Thats great if the artists are serious and looking to make moves, but too many aren’t. And when people say “oh thats dope” but they don’t support in other ways?

All artists are coming out of pocket– studio time, mixing, mastering, artwork. All that shit adds up. Now that mixtapes are DEAD and you are officially making EPs or LPs, it gets even higher, especially if you want to compete with the artist who has a budget.

LOL that shit is horrible. I will say that if thats what it takes to get on then major labels are really obsolete. i basically have to be a superstar in order to get a deal through my own hardwork/time/money? Why the fuck would anybody wanna slice up the proceeds from that with a label?

I think that it will lead to more groups like a Gangstarr. I mean realistically thats what 40 & drake are, with Boi 1da and a cpl others thrown in.

it only goes so far, and for some artists, but id hate to see rap become a somewhat random array of producers and artists that dont understand the concept of making a fluent album, one that connects and is something whole

Yep. A good independent label (or local d-boy) who can provide you with a decent budget, a good manager who can find and book tours, and the drive to go out and push your product–> you can make a GREAT living off that if your able to develop a fanbase.
That being said, too many rappers are still chasing that “brass ring” of the Major label, with the big budget video, sitting in the million dollar studio working on 1 song for 20 hours, going to BET and MTV and shit.
And now labels are taking money out of ALL your pockets- tour, merchandise, etc. You used to be able to keep that bread.

In return for ducking sample and feature clearances, emcees like Consequence can usually lock down an official mixtape sponsor to offset their production costs. Add in the lack of packaging and shipping costs and red tape from the label, and you end up with the ability to give fans a free download. And if you really want to test how much fans want your material, giving it to them for free is a pretty good barometer. From an artist’s perspective, a successful mixtape can serve as a prequel to an album by building fan’s anticipation and drawing the attention of a major label.
