I can see this working in the short term, but the fact that there are restrictions like that could also mean that teams would be restricted from forming teams the way they want too [limits on tier 1 slots]. I mean, Miami kind of made the whole thing work with 3 great players and for the most part average, new, or over the hill guys.
Best case scenario is a hard salary cap like the NFL, and let the teams decide how they want to build their team anyway they want.
It’d be difficult to make the former soft cap a hard one with so many teams already over the cap, but that could be solved simply by raising the cap [most teams are already over the cap, may as well raise it] and easing into the hard cap [exceptions for teams that are already over until the outstanding contracts made before the new CBA are up].

Yeah, the part about us not being needed as a market is kind of overboard. Even if China overtakes the use in in GDP, and other countries come close, it’s a big step from that to replacing the US as the largest and most important market itself. It’s not that long before they overtake us in GDP, but it’ll be a LONG time before they do with GDP per capita, and that is more important for being a good market for companies. How will they overtake us if on a nominal level they are still poorer on average?

20 years ago, it was supposed to be Japan and Germany that overtook the US.
It’s not easy going from a rapidly growing export based economy to one that grows through endogenous demand.
Of course, non of this stops the fear of North Americans being less and less needed as employees–which is my fear.

I guess these are some keys to being outsourcing proof:
1)-have a job that deals directly with customers: Sales, Service. Medical jobs won’t be replaced except for research since that doesn’t involve dealing with patients.
2)-have skills that extend beyond the specialized knowledge of your field. Being someone who is in a technical field but is CREATIVE and therefore not replaceable is a good bet. Low level computer programming work may get outsourced since it’s highly technical but still monkey work, but in the US there is still a MAJOR shortage of quality software engineers, whose work involved much more independent though and creativity on the whole.
3)- Having unusual but marketable skills for your job. Things like foreign languages come to mind for some kinds of jobs in business.

But then I *think*, if the GDP per capita of the top 300 mill approached that of the US–essentially that would mean that employees in the developed, industrial part of the area would be essentially as expensive as doing it in the States, add in transaction costs and producing in China wouldn’t be worth it for American businesses. The reason why business in China is great for firms is the low costs–hence the Chinese Goverment pegging the Yuan IIRC. So basically I don’t think that would happen, or if it does it’s a long time from now.

There is a great book called Fault Lines by Raghuram Rajan [former IMF Chief Economist], which in one of the early chapters goes over the troubles of those modern, quickly industrializing nations in transitioning from export based economies [what China is right now] to ones that can grow based largely on their own internal demand [think US and Western world].
Here’s the thing though….I forgot what he wrote. It was a really convincing argument though…I might have to buy that book.

Yeah, but you could look at it another way–MJ was extremely underpaid by the Bulls over the course of his career then. But he paved the way with his last contract with the Bulls where I think he got close to 30 mill.
Yeah Joe Johnson IMO is another Rashard Lewis-type deal, as in he took advantage of too many teams having too much money the year he was a free agent, but he’s still an anomaly. And unlike the Raptors, Cavaliers, etc. the Hawks are still a playoff team and their fans have a reason to follow the team.
I personally have no reason to follow my Raptors. With and overpaid Bosh there would still at least be a star attraction and hope for the playoffs.
