Most players get between 3 months and 6 weeks off from May to August though, depending on international tournaments. I don’t think Messi, Ronaldo, Iniesta or any of the top players are doping but football doesn’t test whole teams, just one or two at random so there will always be a grey area.

i start thinking, wow – pro boxers fight like 2-3 times a year – training is much more rigorous then soccer as far as i know

You’re forgetting that they have 24 man squads. Players get breaks. Trust. Messi isn’t playing first round games against 3rd division teams in the Spanish Cup. He didn’t play this past weekend after they clinched the title. He missed 3 games in the middle of the season when some crazy Czech dude gave his ankle the ‘butcher treatment’. That’s inadvertent rest right there. Same with yellow card/red card suspensions. Or instead of playing 90 mins, you play one half or come in for the last 20.
Coaches rest players all the time and prioritize competitions. The weekend before a big champions league game on Tuesday or Wednesday, most teams rest star players.
It ain’t that simple.
But ideally, players should want to play as much as possible.
