Right place, right person, right time kinda thing in this case.
I met Janelle back in college, and we traveled in semi similar circles- me and my niggas used to hit Spelman for the poetry slams and shit and pick up the dreadlock shell bitches, lol. She used to hit them jawns, and one day I got gassed up and did a poem, lol. She liked it and afterwords whenever I hit Spelman I would stop by to chill with her click of bitches.
Anyway,
Last week I went to Soundscape Production studios in Dec with some friends from mine to grab beats from a nigga named Flawda Water (Jody Breeze, Rock Ross, Gorilla Zoe, etc) and she was coming in to do a rehearsal session. Well, FLA was the sound engineer and while he was getting everything ready, I stepped out and she was heading into the rehearsal room. I talked to her and she remembered me, and I told her I was still writing. She said she was working on some new shit and was the next time I could be in town. Long story short, her manager hit me with some concepts and told me to come back with some ideas and lyrics. I can’t sing for shit, but I know melody, so I went home and knocked out 7 songs- chorus, lyrics, bridges- and called the manager. He was excited, so we came down and got it cracking. She like 3 of them, and one in particular, so they paid me for them and had me sign some shit that basically said if she uses it, I’ll get paid again– I just can’t speak on it, lol.
And her manager put me in contact with a couple other people who are looking for songs, so its definitely a dope ass connect, and that shit was fun as hell.

Nah, she does. She took what I did based on her concepts and basically edited them. We spent about 4 hours in the studio just reviewing what I had and he listening to what I came up with and wrote while I talked, then came back with something that combined both concepts.
And, according to what I read in the paperwork,the lyrics now belong to them if they choose to use them. I have a copyright, but I “sold” them to her, and they can’t be used or reprinted.
If they are not used, after 5 years, I could give the music to someone else.

Not that every label or managing co works the same way, but if the label/management want to cop a song either through their indie biz or with the blessings of Bad Boy/Atlantic, they the penny up an upfront and hold them shits, sometimes for years, then if it blows they go back to the “parents” of the song then renegotiate the subsequent profits and accreditations that both parties stand to make.
Case in point: Bruno Mars, “Nothing On You,” and his crew The Smeezingtons
They went to Atlantic unsigned and wrote/produced the song, arranged the versus, and literally left 3 16 bar gaps for (insert rapper). Atlantic buys the “negatives” or “demos” or whatever. One of my NSU niggas made beats before he dropped out. Sold 2 beats to Nelly(‘s label) freshmen year and got just over $14,000 (so he says) for the both of them. Neither of those beats have ended up a Nelly CD yet (he buys Nelly CDs now for good luck lol)
But yeah man, if they ever get on a disc best believe he gon get a call from label lawyers talking some “do we need to fly you out here to sign this or can you fax it” type shit.
SN: the main reason isn’t that they want to pay you (at least initially) its the accreditation so you can’t sue THEM. Say B.o.B. wins a grammy for “Nothing On You” and they don’t list his crew on the credits and the crew don’t get their grammy too.

People dont realize…but Bangladesh and Drumma Boy are pioneers of urban…they have both significatly contributed towards the urban sound of todays radio…
Bangladesh re-introduced the 808s drums…which paved the way for producers like Lex Luger….Bangladesh also created that snare breakdown (first heard on “A Millie” and “Diva”) which is now used by alot of other producers (see: Whip my Hair).
Drumma Boy introduced the sequencing of kicks in triplets…which other southern producers developed and now use heavily in their beats.

I wrotw 5 songs based on concepts she gave me, then we went back and rewrote 3 based on the ones she liked. I cam up with the melodies, he vocal coach did the notes (since I have zero experience in this area), and no, her publicist wouldn’t. Let me take any pictures since she was in “work” mode and not in costume.
