Be EXTREMELY careful with those 800 milligram ibuprofens. Especially since you intend to combine them with liquor. I can tell you from first hand experience that you’re making a lethally dangerous mistake. Make sure you eat enough food to keep the ibuprofen from eating a hole in your stomach lining. Otherwise, I hope you have awesome medical insurance.

Saigons album was put together very well… Saigon did his best lyrically for his skill level… It was more of the messages, real talk, social issues that he touched on with out sounding extra preachy that I enjoyed… Justins beats were incredible, the sequencing was well done, the concepts were well thought out… Its a very solid album for hip hop… Especially with whats goin on in the game today

@Hopp
Im just posing the question…
In response to your statement the word “crack” was used to describe good music, Tron could have said “great” “dope” “ill” any variation… I wasnt alluding to the word crack, I was asking if, in this day and age, is a half ass effort done in the recording booth enough to label a hip hop product good? As long as the artist rhymed words together and picked a beat wit a heavy bass line… No soul, no heart, no creativity, no integrity… Or very little… That means its worth our time to listen to it?
Disclaimer: Im not speaking about WTK specifically because I havnt ven listened to the tape to make a judgement, this is strictly for debates sake…

Rap’s the best its been in years tho. High quality weed rap from Currensy, Fiend, etc. Rick is putting out the best mainstream gangsta rap in years. Curtis looks like he’s got second wind, quailty crunk riot music from Juicy J and Waka, and there’s countless upcoming underground cats (Odd Future, Danny Brown, etc) that people seem to be charged bout. Not to mention Kanye’s creative tear of the past 6 or 7 months. And if you ask the average person, Nicki and Em’s albums are dope, even tho I think most of us would agree that they are horrible.

Yeah… One could also make the argument that Rap is nowhere near as vital as it was a decade ago…
Which is really a short time in the case of hip hop, or music in general…
For example, in 2003 What We Do is wrong was a hit record… No chorus, straight bars, WELL PUT TOGETHER BARS, soulful production, a good conceptual visual put together for it…
A record like that wouldnt get time or day on the radio or MTV or any video outlet like that nowadays… And if it did the person airing it would be looked at as a rebel of some sort….
Now you need a Lex Luger-ish sounding instrumental and to say as little as possible in terms of creativity… And your a star… And people openly stan for these “stars”… The same ones who would tell you that thse types of acts ar ruining the game circa 04-05-06…. Are we settling?

That’s all there is to it. Music changes over time, would you REALLY want what was hot in 2003 to still be hot now? no… because where’s the evolution in that?
February 19th, 2011 at 4:43 pm
For example, in 2003 What We Do is wrong was a hit record… No chorus, straight bars, WELL PUT TOGETHER BARS, soulful production, a good conceptual visual put together for it…
^^
Keep in mind tho, with that particular example, the most famous rapper in the world was on the track at a time when his label was getting the most exposure. If say, Rick, dropped a similar track with his two weed carriers, I can see it getting burn.
Also, people in 2003 were saying the same thing about current rap. Hell, my older brother thought rap was in corny sellout mode in the late 90s. I just tend to think things like these are generational as opposed to a true reflection of the music as a whole being weaker, tho I dont think anybody would disagree that the mid-2000s were kinda weak, lol.
February 19th, 2011 at 4:45 pm
One could also make the argument that Rap is nowhere near as vital as it was a decade ago…
Which is really a short time in the case of hip hop, or music in general…
^^
I disagree that it was a short time. Disco went from revolutionary to completely played out in less than a decade. Music trends change super fast.

Ok… Look at the biggest acts of today… Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, Waka Flocka, lil b, etc…
Match them up with the artists of the 90′s and the early thousands… Are we evolving or is the bar lowering?

@B-Ease
I agree with your point about music being more generational. Im not against the new guys (for the most part) because Im a fan of alot of the new artists… I think what made me ask the question to begin with was what we as fans are allowing from the artists… It seemed like our expectations have decreased, when it comes to new acts, but sky rocketed when it comes to the pioneers, the guys that have been around a while; Howver when you talk about the Disco era, that was more of a fad and Hip Hop is a culture… Its here to stay (hopefully) so, IMO, we have to expect alot more from the people in it…
The artists’ business minds are evolving for the better nowadays, tho… People are learning how to build a brand and keep their brand alive… Reinventing thmselves… Sometimes I think its at the cost of their actual music tho…

IMO, 2010 was one of the greatest years for it in recent history. (please read the IMO before bashing)
this is where people underestimate lil wayne’s influence on hip hop’s culture change… his constant stream of online mixtapes/leaked songs circa 2007 changed the landscape… what the fuck else was goin on in that time? now it’s the social networking era… you get hot online and you turn mainstream.

That doesnt mean that the value of the shit hasnt depreciated somewhat…

2010 was great for rap.
The only thing missing was a rap song that competed for ‘song of the summer status’. There was no unifying zeitgeist capturing hit to be found. Everything is a little too fragmented for that, it seems…

how can you really pick a ‘best verse’ for any artist? surely logic would state that if one particular verse is head and toes above the rest of the rapper’s entire catalogue, then, surely, the remainder of that catalogue can’t really be *that* good?
unless of course you’re Nicki Minaj, and the verse we’re talking about is ‘Monster’.

How? Sampling is pretty much dead now, most producers that make it now have their own original sound and compose thier beats using basic computer software..
As opposed to 10 years ago when ppl were looping 5 sec soul samples using 2000 dollar MPCs
Like everything in the universe, there is a balance. Yes music evolves, but also looses certain aspects (such as soul and creativity)..theres an exact balance between what is gained and lost, which is y both sides of the argument make valid points

you have to be relevant/present (for the most part, unless your name ends with Smalls or Pac) to have an impact on your artistry.
^you talked about evolution. all the people i’ve listed pushed the artform further with their work. if they never made another song they already made major contributions. look at smooth the hustler, he pushed the artform forward with one song and was basically never heard from again.

true. maybe a more correct statement would be that the rate at which hiphop is evolving has slowed down drastically over the past 5 years compared to the rate that it had evolved up to that point.

Like everything in the universe, there is a balance. Yes music evolves, but also looses certain aspects (such as soul and creativity)..
^^^
Exactly… If the state of Hip Hop right now is a direct result of evolution, then we lost some soul and some creativity…
When theres more conformity than originality, in my opinion, were devolving…
Producers may have stopped sampling so much, but they making the same beat over and over again so much that its rediculous… I remember when rappers use to have many flows now its just the same verse same subject matter (IE Drake)….
I mean, I wont knock it… If it works it works… But were settling

Jay-z – Party Life
Nas ft Scarface – Favour for a favour
Jay-z – Hova song outo
Nas – 2nd childhood
Jay-z – Ain’t no love
Weird, the run was stopped with Monch, Common & Kweli – The Truth.
February 20th, 2011 at 7:06 am
Followed by:
Jay-z – Show you how
Scorcher – Keep on moving
Jeezy, Wayne & drake – Going in
Black Rob – Woah
Nas ft mobb deep – Live nigga rap
Currently listening to Common – A song for Assata
February 20th, 2011 at 8:07 am
The argument thateverything sounds the same now is futile…
If anything, its more varied now. Like mentioned before, it depends what YOU choose to listen to….
But from the overall perspective, the BIGGEST hiphop songs are less similiar now than they were before….for example..black and yellow vs moment 4 life vs bmf vs love the way you lie vs all of the lights….
Compared to 10-15 years ago wen everyone jyst sampled soul tracks, and used the same mpc stock sound kits…
February 20th, 2011 at 8:33 am
Dunk contest was meeh… most of that shit has been done before, nowadays it’s down to creativity as I said, and jumping over a car whilst dunking the alley-oop whilst a choir sings in the background is pretty creative, so he won.

If you keep active by doing a lot of exercise/ playing sports then recovering shouldn’t be a problem even as you get older, right?

It does, hence Kobe having real bad knees.. can hardly even practice cause that shit hurts too much the next day

@ The Cool:
Lol. At some point age factors in, no matter how in shape you are. That point varies, but is typically around the early thirties. Although staying in shape will slow down the effects of aging as far as physical recovery is concerned.
