Video: Talib Kweli & Freeway Freestyle on Toca Tuesdays
Tuesday, December 7th, 2010Last week, we scheduled Freeway and Talib Kweli for the show. Due to complications they both showed up at the same time. Instead of going in one at a time, we let them both sit in on the show. Of course, Tony took advantage of this moment, putting both of them on the mic.
Props to Al Lindstrom. After the jump, check out Talib’s interview with DubCNN and download The Community Mixtape here.

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010Audio: Redman on Juan Epstein
Tuesday, December 7th, 2010What’s better than Peter and Ciph having 2 of my top 3 MCs of all time on Juan Epstein within the last month? They might as well call up Lord Finesse and go for the trifecta, no? There’s a new Big L album out, that could definitely be an excuse to get him up there. I’m just gonna throw that out there.
This episode is pretty dope, although not as great as the Jay episode, in part because that R&B guy Miguel wastes a lot of time flapping his gums. Seriously, no shots at Miguel, but what qualifies him to even sit in a room with Redman much less take up valuable Juan Ep interview time? SMH.
In any event, topics covered include: Def Jam’s loss of cultural relevance, the best tour he ever went out on (Hard Knock Life in ’99 – I was there), DMX, beating up the soundman, the internet’s impact on shit talk, groupies, Jay-Z back when he was a regular guy, being a regular guy himself, his few beefs including the short lived static with Mobb Deep, respect over financial success, the criteria for being considered one of the best of all time, Jersey in general and Newark specifically, his long history of collaborations, says he wants to do an album with Jamiroquai, he claims he has a freestyle over a Dilla beat that was ultimately used by Q-Tip (presumably “Move/Renaissance Rap“) that he’s gonna send to Peter and Ciph, Biggie and copping trees from Branson.
He swears up and down he’s gonna emancipate that Dilla joint, so we might get blessed with that later today if he can get his hands on his laptop.

Video: The Def Jam Rapstar x Complex Raise The Mic Contest Winner
Tuesday, December 7th, 2010Congrats to VerbalSoze who has been announced as the winner of the Def Jam Rapstar x Complex Raise The Mic competition. As a contest judge, I can tell you that this guy was the clear frontrunner from jump. The production quality on his video isn’t great, but keep in mind that was made on a video game system in a few minutes (one of the great new features available in Def Jam Rapstar). It’s not easy to shine or get a message across in a 30 second clip, but Verbal was one of the few entrants that managed to do just that, so props to him.
As part of his prize package, Verbal will receive a pair of custom Def Jam Rapstar sneakers, a pair of customized Def Jam Rapstar microphones and a 1-on-1 meeting with Kevin.

The tape features new music from Talib Kweli and the Blacksmith fam, as well as members of the YearOfTheBlacksmith.com online community who were selected by Kweli himself after a series of song submissions.
