True…that shit is overrated imo. If I wanna listen to an early 90s rap album i’ll listen to old big, jay, nas, mobb…and they did it way better. I was never a fan of Ross but I’d be lyin if didn’t put TD up there, as well as How I Got Over, and then of course Ye’s album. And my sleeper is Kendrick Lamar even though it was technically a mixtape. And I can’t lie I’m bangin the shit otu of this kid Tyler, The Creator’s mixtape. Their whole crew (Odd Future) is fuckin tough actually. Got a Gza and Mos co-sign as well.

Most of it is free music but I rather catch up on old shit since I’m a young dude. Plus sometimes I end up buying a classic. Worth my money.

This is true. But if your talking out-and-out rapping ability, Guru was sub-par, at best. He was able to drop gems, though, and he bequeathed the monotone flow to Jason Phillips, a much better rapper, but less able song writer.

It’s been twenty-two long hard years of still strugglin
Survival got me buggin, but I’m alive on arrival
I peep at the shape of the streets
And stay awake to the ways of the world cause shit is deep
A man with a dream with plans to make C.R.E.A.M.
Which failed; I went to jail at the age of 15
A young buck sellin drugs and such who never had much
Trying to get a clutch at what I could not… could not…
The court played me short, now I face incarceration
Pacin — going up state’s my destination
Handcuffed in back of a bus, forty of us
Life as a shorty shouldn’t be so ruff
But as the world turns I learned life is hell
Living in the world no different from a cell
Everyday I escape from Jakes givin chase, sellin base
Smokin bones in the staircase
Though I don’t know why I chose to smoke sess
I guess that’s the time when I’m not depressed
But I’m still depressed, and I ask what’s it worth?
Ready to give up so I seek the Old Earth
Who explained working hard may help you maintain
to learn to overcome the heartaches and pain
We got stickup kids, corrupt cops, and crack rocks
and stray shots, all on the block that stays hot
Leave it up to me while I be living proof
To kick the truth to the young black youth
But shorty’s running wild smokin sess drinkin beer
And ain’t trying to hear what I’m kickin in his ear
Neglected, but now, but yo, it gots to be accepted
That what? That life is hectic
I dunno, B. Deck really did his thing…

November 12th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Drake > J. cole lyrically i think. When drake wants to rap he goes in. see – 9 am in dallas, aston martin music, fear, comeback season etc. And his content is more relavent. Cole only raps about, women, money, and “the game” . Drake gets more personal (goals, family life, love life, specific events in his life).
But anyway, J. Cole and Omen are like Drake and 40 when it comes to making well put together tracks.

You’d think that if you were the only one who knew there was about to be a battle, you’d have the benefit of being able to prepare. Indeed it does look like Charles Hamilton came equipped with some rhymes to spit at Serius Jones, and they were reasonably well-crafted for what they were, it’s just that Serius Jones is apparently capable of coming up with way better rhymes off the top of his head, while he’s sitting there getting his fro tightened up. Watching him tear Charles Hamilton a new asshole (no small feat, if you catch my drift [||], you get the sense that if you instigated a battle with Serius Jones while he was taking a nap, he’d just wake up and ether you, then go right back to sleep. Note to self, don’t fuck with Serius Jones.

Of course, Charles Hamilton didn’t do himself any favors, showing up looking like a real life version of Tyrone Biggums, except with a pink Hello Kitty hat. Who knew that character was apparently based on shit a crackhead might actually wear? I’d only been aware of the sweatpants and dress shoes. (RIP DJ AM) At least he appeared to be getting around reasonably well. The last time we saw him, in that XXL video, he was in that wheelchair. Which, at the time, could have been dismissed as a cheap sympathy ploy or publicity stunt, but it’s since been revealed, by Sonic himself, in a weird, cryptic blog post that his handlers have since had removed from the Internets as if it was some of my old XXL stuff, that he’s now suffering from both AIDS and cancer. He even claims to not be sure whether he’s survive to the ripe old age of 23. Whether or not that’s true of course remains to be seen, though I don’t have any problem at all believing there’s something seriously wrong with him, whether it’s some terminal disease, a drug problem, or plain ol’ garden variety craziness.

Oh shit I actually didn’t know that. Fair dudes. Bleek has gold albums? Really? Anyway, even though these guys have achieved commercial success (in some minute forms), you have to understand that they were around when hip hop cds were flying off shelves. Its much harder to discredit cole for not having commercial success during days of the download + the fact that he doesn’t have an album out.
And seriously, who has ever said ‘Oh amil or bleek bodied that verse! Or amil or bleek are serious lyricists’? Nobody! Cuz its just not gonna happen. Meanwhile, J.cole has bodied practically everyone he’s been on tracks witH. So to simply attribute his moderate success and his talent to a Jay-z cosign is asinine b. Stop the crazy talk.

it’s not a secret when i speak it
i know that hatin’ isn’t physical but dawg i could peep it
it’s like a preacher preachin’ his scripts or psychic readin’ a palm
lines give me what i write in-this song
the book is now open so let the story be told
i enter through your mind and exit the back of your soul
that could push you to some insight
a shine like a headlight
Pickeny diamond watch me get right
i’m that nice
words is a cure that help me heal up a heart
words can become that evil game that help me get what i want..uh
you start where you end, you end where you start
i am the light of the situation i overshine dark
give you the pen, the book, the word, the truth, the sight, the mind
i put it down, you call it a rhyme, i call it a sign
i predict the unpredictable
heaven is invisible, but hell isn’t physical
let me stop with the spiritual.. whoa
let me spit at you, show you how to move with no vehicle
come through your speakers

I think people are overrating the Jay Z co-sign,Jay-Z doesn’t appear on shit with J Cole,NOTHING. If you don’t like him that’s one thing, but most fans of his don’t even know/care that he’s on Roc Nation. He only did 1 joint with Jay and most people think BP3 is ass as an album. He been performing for a while now and building his buzz dolo at colleges and shit. He wins over crowds. As a rapper I think you can agree that wack is wack,if he was ass he wouldn’t have this buzz,Jay Z co-sign or not. His tape was the most anticipated in a while.

Niggas are extra nice to j cole for the simple fact they wont jayz to be happy, jayz dont have to spit a rhyme anymore, his name co signing sumthin is the value…

November 12th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
@ Jerz
I am not putting everything on that co-sign. I am saying that his ascent to a mainstream artist is partially a result of him being signed to Roc Nation. I’m not saying Cole is wack, but when I see people say shit ridiculous shit, I gotta call it. Cole IS the most technically proficient, BORING rapper I have since I attempted to sit thru Wale’s Mixtape About Nothing– not wack, but (for me personally), he’s nothing I go back to listen to when I have choices– in that, he is like Bleek, but a much better lyricist. I respect his buzz and his work, but when people say “Cole is top 5″ and “cole is the future” I gotta speak on it.

Dear Kanye,
I have early recollections of Damon Dash calling me and forcing me to put you on Def Poetry Jam. I knew your record, “Through The Wire,” but I didn’t know much more. When you took the stage on Def Poetry Jam that night, and spit those genuine, heartfelt words, I witnessed your specialness that Damon had emphatically told me about.
From that moment on, you became a poet who has inspired the poets. I have proudly watched your career since then, and in case someone has missed the obvious, you are making a historical impact on music. Your life story took a tough turn with the passing of your mother. Although we grieved with you, we never really knew how much pain you were in. We witnessed your moment at the MTV Music Awards and many of us dismissed it as, “oh that is just Kanye being Kanye.” The hard part of all of this, is that we have all had moments in our lives that have been challenging, painful and hard to overcome, however most of us just hide our emotions and never deal with that inner-struggle that we face on a daily basis. As an artist, Kanye, you have always looked inside for your inspiration…always exuding emotions that are in us, but that we never expose. That is what artistry is about…to look inside for what is unique. With your journey towards a higher level of consciousness, a journey that we all are on, you have shown through your art a commitment to greatness.
The thirty minute film you most recently made was beyond brilliant. Brilliance is not a word that can even begin to describe your ability to paint vibrant, vivacious, colorful yet muted paintings of poetry, music, costume, art, design and most important, passion. The passion you put into your new album is why I stayed up all those nights in the early 80′s trying to get DJs and radio stations to play our records. I knew this day would come. Actually, maybe I didn’t know, but I really, really hoped it would. I didn’t work this hard when I was your age to watch the culture go the wrong way. And you, my friend, just took us to another level. I am simply in awe.
With this power, as you know, comes great responsibility. I am saying nothing you haven’t heard before. When you spoke about President Bush during the Katrina telethon, it was not the particulars of your words that mattered, it was the essence of a feeling of the insensitivity towards our communities that many of us have felt for far too long. It was the image of the President, our President, the President of the United States Of America, peering out the window of an airplane, as the people on the ground were drowning, that hurt us the most. For centuries, our people have relentlessly tread water as hard as they could to stay afloat, and here we were, literally drowning, and it felt like the President was insensitive. There is no need to apologize, Kanye. You spoke from your heart and that is all we will ever ask from you. Don’t be afraid of the press, as your art is your blueprint, thanks to Jay-Z, your big brother, we will always carry our destiny in our own hands. You are are an artist whose art is masterful. You are a servant to this world who no matter how hard it gets, keeps on giving. Giving gifts that inspire us, challenge us and motivate us to be better family and friends.
Keep on, Kanye. Keep on. We love you. We cherish you. And we will always have your back.
-Russell Simmons

But see, thats downplaying these niggas…. Bleek had to show and prove on those jawns, or get shitted on– and he showed up, everytime. Plus, the posse cut was how the established rapper put on his crew– you can’t blame the rapper for the era he came up in, cuz the jungle is the same– everybody had a crew or “next nigga” to put on.
I mean, be serious, when did you first learn about Cole, and what attracted you to take a listen to his music? TBH, it was when I heard Camel signed his first artist out of NC, then I went looking for his music. I wasn’t trolling Datpiff for new artists to listen to, and NO blog was posting his music until the signing came to light= fact.

November 12th, 2010 at 10:42 pm
Are you serious?? Bleek didn’t body these tracks? Stop the rapper hating, B. Bleek wasn’t wack, just supremely overshadowed by Beans and Camel.
Jermaine WOULD not even be in this discussion if Camel wouldn’t have co-signed him in the first place, he would be an underground rapper getting love on blogs like 2DB and Kevin Nottingham… No hate, just the truth.
___________________________________________________________
Nah, he didn’t BODY em to me. Don’t get me wrong, Bleek is by no means wack. His verses are simply serviceable with two key exceptions (Coming Of Age verse + Vol 2 Intro). That’s the thing, everything you say strengthens MY argument. Cole would not have gotten overshadowed if HE was the one of tracks with beans and Jay cuz he’s that much doper (than bleek or beans). Yeah BEANS too!
Stop this talk about cole not going anywhere without the cosign. Everyone gets their big break from somewhere. Kanye would never have gotten recognition as a rapper if the roc didn’t put his album out, Jay would not have blown up if Biggy wasn’t murdered, snoop would be an unknown stick figure without his placement on the chronic. When you’re given your chance, you take it. End of story! That’s what cole did.

Real rap, I first heard of Drake at my homies Traphouse in DC. His sister was over there putting together an order and put in a mix cd she put together, which included “Best I ever had”– I thought the song was kinda dope, and Googled the song name. The mixtape it was on came up, which I DL’d, then deleted everything but Best I Ever Had… About 2 months later, the shit came on PGC..
*kanye shrug*
And Like I said, if Bleek was being marketed and pushed, who knows? Stranger things have happened. You can’t be out of th public eye anymore, PERIOD, or you WILL fall off. Bleek took care of his brother, and what little fanbase he cultivated off Camel left him, labeled him a weed carrier, then Camel sniped him by accident on the Seirra Lione remix, which basically confirmed his Weed carrier status.

My Twitter feed just started going absolutely insane when rumors were swirling that Jay Electronica had signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. And, well, it’s looking like those rumors have been confirmed as numerous sites are reporting that Jigga has announced the news at an event tonight. Also, hip-hop site Rappers I Know, one of the first sites to co-sign and post Jay Elect’s music, has put up a simple congratulatory post to the MC entitled, ” Jay Electronica; Congrats .” It might seem ambiguous until you look at the post’s tags: Act II, Jay

If the opposite happens and Jay E and Camel are riding around on speedboats trying to remake the hypnotize video, or Jay E and Willow Smith drop his newest single “Whip your Fez,” will you keep it funky and said Camel fucked up?

November 12th, 2010 at 11:21 pm
Earlier I spoke to Jay E. about the big news, and his plans. He said that the actual contract was signed on Saturday, after a few weeks of intense daily communication and creative courtship. How did it start? With a chance meeting at the Spotted Pig. How did Electronica know Hov was serious? His second replay email came attached with a verse. That ended up becoming the Jay Electronica and Jay-Z collaboration “Shiny Suit Theory” (featuring French chanteuse Charlotte Gainsbourg and The-Dream).
There’s irony in the fact Jay-Z appears on a Jay Elec song that’s based on Diddy’s description of Jay Elec. Because Diddy has been mentoring and courting Jay for over a year, in the hopes of signing him as well. Electronica insists he values everything Puff contributed and hopes to have him involved in his career, but said “Jay-Z made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. And I have the freedom I need too.” The natural of the underground, the anti-establishment, the independent artist is rapidly changing…so I’m anxious to see what happens when Jay the conglomerate and Jay the mystic mix commerce and art.

Oh, of course. I gotta drink an extra glass of water to the Camel’s hustle game. He basically poached Jay E. from Sean Combs by sending him a verse and great contract (most likely not a 360, but the type of contract that will attract talent that would sign a 360 in order to join the Roc, like a Wiz or a Currensy)… Shit was genius.

Coles verse is impressive for those people that check for punchlines. I prefer story based rap, and Jay’s verse was so measured, yet poingnant. I mean, you can literally put yourself in that same cab with Jay, riding round NY trying to get SOMEONE at a label to listen to you and take a chance, even though you spitting that black righteousness, knowledge-of-self rap…
I mean, I basically consider Jays verse “grown man’s rap” and Coles “rap for regular niggas”
But to each their own.

November 12th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
@JiHad- That’s one of my favorite verses of his.
Most underrated Jay Elec verse = a@fatbellybella verse
He said that shits not makin Act II! Thats gotta be one of the illest verses in a while
I said I love you baby, but you ain’t act like it,
Squeeze my feet, kiss my neck, rub my back like it,
And on the phone it’s just you gon hit me back right quick.
First we was straight now it feel like we jack-knifin,
Kamikaze love, self-destructive patterns,
Mercury and retrograde, four house of Saturn.
Nothing makes me sadder than,
Hailing cabs and long goin home on a Saturday,
Bumpin’ Donny Hathaway, questioning my choices.
Thinkin ’bout marriage, carriage, and horses,
Man on the hectare, land like a fortress.
I hope you understand me,
Yo I’m cold like New York,
My heart is warm like Miami,
I’m just trying to build a Kingdom for my people and my Family.
Sometimes I don’t know what to say,
The pain never stops, the cloud never goes away,
The rain never drops.
It’s a luxury,
Be grateful that I must to see,
The faith is enough to be,
Enough to move a mountain,
My pen is an artery,
My heart is a fountain.
I apologize
