Definitely a STACKED album, but it just bothers me that so many artists rely on features as a crutch to move their albums or get some sort of attention, because let’s be honest here (i’m not saying he isn’t a dope MC) how many of us would even be paying to banks if it wasn’t for the association with artists like Kanye or Pusha T, Raekwon or Fab ?

@TS,

what do you think of the recent Kanye Music? despite the fuckery.
^I think his music fall off slightly. He no longer can make a beat like “Guess Who’s Back” on his own anymore. Most of the recent beats have been over-produced and lacking real soul quality.
His rhyming really wasn’t that great to begin with. He just had punchlines, themes, and a lot of similies. He lost a lot of that to me.
His dress code:…………THE FUCK?!?!?…………………….
The art work and his cinematography skill went through the roof though. So has a lot of his visuals
I ain’t impressed with him but I’ll still listen to support artists from my city.
October 21st, 2010 at 6:53 pm

October 21st, 2010 at 7:59 pm
I can honestly say that I’ve never complained about an artist just doing his own thing without features. When I listen to an artist, I want to hear THAT artist. The exception is 808s and Heartbreaks. I maintain that Kanye would have had a strong effort with that one if he got actual singers to sing on it, rather than moaning like a depressed bitch through a voice-box.
Guests are cool, but in small doses and if they have some thing unique to contribute, even if it’s just background vocals or adlibs

Yep. As to the second point, definitely. The focus on the inner workings of the American family along with the commentary of our modern existence thru the social mores of the characters make it more like The Sopranos than anything that’s been on since. Mad symbolism that really requires thinking on what you just saw. Fair warning, alot of people I know can’t stand it, and dismiss it as soap opera-ry.

You can’t say that the 16 year old blueprint of Illmatic is so outdated that as to have become a bad idea. Classic albums tend to have certain things in common, Illmatic just happens to be one of the few classics that seems to have every factor. That’s why I use it as the Blueprint.

By my logic, Life After Death and The Chronic are classic, but they aren’t the equal of Illmatic to me. You probably could have found better examples though. Life After Death is a DOUBLE album, thus having a ton of guests is justifiable. You don’t want the listener to get bored. The Chronic is only a solo album in name; it’s mostly a showcase for Dr. Dre’s uniform production and his crew of rappers, who all happen to rap about the same awesome shit throughout.

Eh, authentic is too subjective. You don’t like Ross as an artist in general, so his songs with features are naturally going to sound forced, or unnatural to you, when in fact, with the possible exception of Jadakiss on MM3, I think every guest on Teflon Don was weaved into the fabric of the LP very well. Gucci gave an uninspiring performance, but him appearing on MC Hammer made total sense to me.

In any event, I think a better articulation of my point is that the best barometer of a classic album is classic albums that we’ve all listened to in the past. I just happen to think Illmatic is the best of those classics. One of the things that stands out about Illmatic is the lack of guests.
I think some classics are better than others. In my opinion, the best ones have fewer guests.

The biggest problem in Hip Hop fans is the generational gap…. I’m 29, and truthfully unless a nigga is over the age of 26, 27… the odds are them niggas don’t know shit about good Hip Hop music… but it’s the fault of niggas my age and older for not teaching and giving the Hip Hop 101 to these young boys…. Until that gap between generations works itself…. it’s going to continue to be 2 radically different viewpoints and overall knowledge of the culture & artform

Doggystyle is basically The Chronic 2 + more Snoop.
Tical – is arguable. Besides, Wu albums all follow the same collabo heavy format.
Stankonia is pretty damn great. But it’s not Aquemini or ATLiens.

Even talent-wise, during that era? William never makes it out- Big, Camel, Nas/Firm, AZ, Rae, Ghost…. There were too many options for that type of rap for him to make a lane. The best thing to happen for him was for Jeezy to blow up– Jeezy opened the lane for the new southern drug dealer, even more than TI did (and UGK/Scarface going back to the origins).

When I try rap along with an early Nas/Jay/Pun/Big/Kool G Rap verse, I usually can’t stay with those rappers for one reason or the other, even though I know those verses down cold.
The rappers that are worth my time must have impeccable technique. There.

Yea, Elite rappers should have impeccable technique, but they should also say something musically profound- by that I mean that they are explaining their life experience thru their music, be it street life, real life, etc. If they can’t do that, they need to be at least ENTERTAINING. Some of those same rappers have verses that are much more difficult to recite. Memorability isn’t the issue. Technique is what I’m getting at.

I’ll agree to disagree from 1 standpoint… As talented as Banks is… he has yet to put out an album on the level of The Natural, at the end of the day that’s what it’s really about. How good of an album can you make? From start 2 finish … very hard to argue to that… You are right about the opportunities that both had though, I won’t even disagree with you on that…. People act like I’m stuck in the 90′s or something, and that’s not the case at all…. but I can’t put up a front, to say there are a whole bunch of Gems in the last decade, there really isn’t! I think the half of the reason all the GOAT & Top 5 talk occurs is because niggas are bored…

Honestly, I think THAT is the biggest difference in hip-hop now. EVERYBODY raps now, or produces, or knows someone that can. Nobody listens to music without comparison to other music or their boys n them, etc. People say STAN whenever you say you like an artist, or say something positive, and call you a hater when you give a critique that isn’t positive. Its impossible to be a fan now– niggas and kizzas dissect the music months before release, listen to leaks, watch trailers for videos, and download mixtape after mixtape until they get tired of the artist… then they throw them away.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I really consider myself a student of the art of rapping. So many rappers bore me because their technique is terrible. Everyone comes off as bored and uninterested in the art of putting together words, voice modulation, syllable count, etc, rhyme scheme… people are so concerned with punchlines and swag that its disgusting.

So by culture you mean not just hip hop music then ? ‘Cause I don’t give a fuck about no break dancing.
Hip Hop is entertainment, now. Music is entertainment. Jay Z calls himself an “entertainer”. I’m a hip hop fan, but I don’t have to live hip hop because I’m not a hip hop artist. Just like I don’t have to live basketball, but I’m a basketball fan.

Not a job, but definitely a culture. Being culturally aware means exactly what Goldberg is talking about. Rap has become disposable and entertainment value has overshadowed talent and authenticity.

So that means you like Rap music then– the entertainment aspect as you will. Thats fine, but there is a difference. I don’t know how to break dance or DJ, but I appreciate their place in my culture. I understand graffiti and raps place in that same culture. I understand the difference in lexicon, slang, word codification, and terminology. I grew up with that shit. The dress, the attitiude. Thats Hip-Hop. You don’t have to like it or be a part of it– you can just like Rap. I listen to heavy metal and alternative music, but I ain’t a rocker, ya dig?

difficult to explain…
the show revolves around white men of the 50s- early 60s….what i notice is over the seasons is the show makes an emphasis on cultural references of those times and that people back then had marriage issues, women in the workplace, teenagers sex, racism, of course. Great acting, smart writing, you gotta see it for yourself to decide if your going to like it or not.

Isn’t it ironic that Game’s career is going downhill while Banks is on the up ? Game put out 4 singles that made no noise….. S M F H ….I guess 50 really was writing the hooks for Game.

when i first saw the promo on AMC i thought it was a crime show as well…
after 3-4 episodes of the first season i found it quite boring honestly…a show about ad salesman, but near the end of the season when the writers delved into the characters and their problems it got alot less boring…
