Mick Boogie and Terry Urban – Viva La Hova (Remastered & Expanded)

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Viva La Hova was originally released two years ago, when it earned a co-sign from Jay-Z and a post on Coldplay’s blog, and with the news of a Jay-Z/Chris Martin’s NYE show, has since started being talked about again. Mick Boogie and Terry Urban recently decided to push-up the date of the re-release of their wildly popular mash-up project:

Two years ago, Mick Boogie and Terry Urban set the music world on fire with an unprecedented mash-up (although they hate that word) of musical icons Jay-Z and Chris Martin/Coldplay… Viva La Hova. The project featured production from Mick, Terry, 9th Wonder, Cookin’ Soul, The Kickdrums, nVMe, 6th Sense and others. Viva La Hova went on to garner hundreds of thousands of downloads, and receive acclaim around the world. Jay-Z himself told Mick he liked the project… and Coldplay even linked to it on their official website.

As the weather gets colder and summertime fades away, it seemed like a perfect time to re-release a project that can only be described as ambient cold weather music. “Terry and I were planning on re-releasing it in December anyways, just because everywhere we go, people ask us about it,” said Mick Boogie. “After Jay-Z and Coldplay announced their big New Years Eve plans, including performing together integrating their songs… and about a million people emailed us… we decided to just drop the re-release now. Why wait?”

Featuring two new bonus songs not contained on the original Viva La Hova release, this project also finds the original mixes re-mastered, non-sequenced, and without the signature “dj drops” over the songs. “Everyone always told us they treated this project as an album, and not a mixtape,” said Terry Urban. “This being the playlist generation, we wanted to offer the songs in an album, non-mixed format so people can use the songs however they see fit.”

The Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble (who has covered J. Dilla in the past,) along with Aloe Blacc, pay homage to Guru:

Here’s the final and 3rd video from the recent free event by The Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble in Los Angeles, CA. Hopefully by now, you’ve checked the previous two videos, one featuring Bilal, and the other featuring Flying Lotus. Backed by some of today’s best musicians, including Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave on drums and Stephen ‘Thundercat’ Bruner on bass, The Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble’s performance was truly as special moment for Los Angeles.

This final video features Aloe Blacc. Together, Miguel and Aloe pay homage and tribute to Gang Starr MC Keith ‘Guru’ Elam, doing an arrangement of Gang Starr’s “Betrayal,” which initially featured Scarface.
