John Legend & The Roots – Shine

The second single off John Legend & The Roots’ Wake Up! I know what you’re thinking, if this was really the second single, where’s the custom-made artwork to go along with it or the big name website to premiere something from these two high-profile acts… *shrug* I don’t ask too many questions.

I mean, real rap, Nas is the best writer. BIG had the most raw talent. And Pac was the most influential. But CamelGoat earned the title of #1. He EARNED it. Dropping an album every year? Unprecedented for a rapper of his caliber, still. He truly is the MJ of rap. He made himself the best thru sheer willpower. I gotta acknowledge and respect that.

I wonder why so many rappers are still doing Illmatic tributes in 2010.

    ^^
Because it had a bearing on their current art. Which is a testament to that album. But it’s also telling that nobody would dare rap over Suicidal Thoughts, Unbelievable, or Doggy Dog World.

    ^^

I don’t think anybody could match The Dogg Pounds charisma and overall content on Doggy Dogg World, but 50 has touched both Unbelievable and Suicidal Thoughts, with his interpolation of Suicidal thoughts coming as recently as 2009 (Forever King).

I do agree with you about RTD though, with the caveat being two songs in particular- Juicy and Big Poppa. Those songs stand out like sore thumbs on that album, but in a way they are where music headed following the release of Illmatic– to the point that even Nasir followed that lane once we saw the accolades (and money!) that Big got.

biggie said on wax some ill shit. Nas green lighted him.

    ^^
But Biggie (or Puffy) saw something Nas didnt, which is why Ready to Die dominated that year. And that was the applying of said illness to “commercial” tracks. Taking the then current West Coast recipe of banging beats with mic charisma, and melding it with the East Coast trend of having the best wordplay. Nas didnt understand that till It Was Written.

^ ok I agree, that was the brain child of puff, but still they piggybacked off Nas unconventional, no holds bar approach…

    ——-
biggie didnt say ill shit really, big was all about delivery…he revolutionized the art of emceeing.

^ biggie said he wanted to kill his mother on a song b. If that aint ILL, dont know what is.

Dude said bitch was so bad he’d suck on her daddys dick. Now as homo as that is…. NO argument its an ill statment. ILLness was the way to go after illmatic dropped, trust. Now Jay z decided he could be ILL and kill ‘em with clever wit too.
