Yea, shin splints suck ass. They are usually the result of weakened calfs or low arches. You can do 2 things:
Calf raises- Do them with dumbbells, seated 3 set of 12
Standing calf raises- find a smith machine and set up 25s on the ground. put the balls of your feet on the edge of the 25s, and raise up with some weight on the bar (start with about 95-135 to begin). do 3 sets of 15
The key to these is to take your hamstrings out of the equation- take 2 secs to raise up, hold for 3, the, rop and wait for 3 seconds- this takes all the tension out of you hams and achilles and forces the calfs to do all the work.
At home, take a can (beans whatever) and put it under your feet, and roll it back and forth for about 30 sec, then switch feet. do three sets on each foot. This will help work the muscles in your feet, and help build an arch in your feet, which should help as well.
Finally, if your getting them while working out, do less..if your running, jog, or walk. if your liftin, reduce the weight.
