    Ive never bought that whole distinction between and MC and a Rapper

    and Nas has referred to himself as both

    ^ oh but there is a distinction… a MC is organic and does it from the heart, the passion is felt throughout and the movement is respected… A rapper on the other hand is a carbon copy, not connected on the spiritual level (his pulse and heartbeat aint in accordance with hip hop) it doesnt run in his veins. Rapper is more of an image, Mc is a lifestyle.

  46. Remixznflow Says:

    i thought MC meant Master of Ceremony as in he accompanied the DJ…. the attention was orignially supposed to be directed at the DJ… what the DJ was doin…

    and MC was supposed to move the crowd and whatnot…

    a rapper on the other hand does not do any of this.. his job is to affect things with his or her words… the track behind them is not as important… rather what they are saying… originally that is…

    now i dont know WTF rappers are doin… no idea…

  113. RNC Chairman Michael Steele Says:

    I think the term MC has much more historic meaning in rap than it does today. No younger rap fan uses the term MC. And that’s worth mentioning because I think everyone can agree hip hop’s core audience [not casual fans, people who follow hip hop as a genre] changed a lot since 1999. You can be a hip hop fan that follows hip hop that has nothing to do with what rap was in the 90s [Wiz Khalifa, B.o.B., Cudi, and those underground rap scenes like Grime, Dubsetp, etc.]. That wasn’t possible before.

    That’s where the distinction between MCs and Rappers strarted, I would guess. An MC is someone who cares about where hip hop started, it’s roots, and actively makes an effort to find his place in that history. A rapper is someone who partakes in the same kind of music, but doesn’t care much for hip hop’s history or canon outside of any rapper he may take influence from.

    Comparing Nas to Plies works, but it doesn’t really show the fine distinction because those two are very different. Better comparisons would be:

    Lil Wayne= MC
    Gucci= Rapper

    Both of these guys are weird as fuck and rely on personality and flow over straight lyrics and songs. But with Wayne there is definite attempt to be a part of hip hop history, as everyone saw on Carter 3. Or his insistence on Biggie motifs, and competing with Jay-Z. Gucci on the other hand doesn’t give a shit [NTTAWWT]. One more pair with similar appeal:

    Drake=MC
    Wiz=Rapper

    Yep. Drake whether you like him or hate him, he cares about his place in hip hop history, by all accounts he follows hip hop like a head and wants to make an impact that way. Wiz is great and at this point I like him more, but like Gucci I doubt he cares about hip hop’s lineage or his place in it.

  129. b-ease Says:

    Technically, the term rapper does denote an artist considered “mainstream” since “rap” was a term created by them because of the thin similarities between the mc’s spoken lyrics and the poetry of H.Rap Brown and others. A MC, as stated above, is originally the master of ceremony, the dj’s sidekick, then it evolved to those seen as advancing the artform by making their main focus making the rhymes more intricate and truth revealing.

    But with that said, the two terms have melted and bled into each other to the point where any debate about them becomes one based on semantics, and semantics are wack to debate about.

    Soulja Boy story is def appluaded but he essentially hit da lottery.

    ^^^

    Nah, like others have said, he was smart enough to take advantage of the tools given to his generation- the internet, youtube, and myspace. Those, along with cheap ass recording equipment and downloadable fruity loops programs helped him. He is actually a self-made man, and for that I respect him. His music isn’t for grown folks, but I can respect that he is making music for kids. I mean, most niggas here are fronting like they were listening to KRS-One and Public Enemy when they were 10, when they were most likely jamming to MC hammer, ABC, and Kris Kross on the radio, wearing their clothes backwards and saying “inside out is wiggidy wiggidy wiggidy wack.”

    I’d go so far as to say that every nigga on here went back and caught up on the Illmatics, Ready to Dies, etc after they got older and could appreciate more than the commercial singles, most likely around the age of 13-14.

    FOH like niggas knew what the fuck Mobb Deep and Wu were talking about in 92. If you was an 80s baby living outside of NY, you didn’t grow up around that–you grew up with the commercial shit–shit JUST LIKE DeAndre is rapping right now.

    Eminem probably did more to expand hip hops core audience than any other rapper in history. You kind of had to be my age to really get it. Around 10-11 years old when MM LP came out. Em was everyones favourite musician then, and was so many dudes first favourite rapper.

    But part of me wonders how many of those new fans stayed after he went on hiatus. Em right now just happens to be the biggest rapper in the world again, but Im starting to feel like a lot of his fans right now dont seem to follow hip hop in any capacity. Which makes me wonder about his fans before. Now that I think of it some of the dudes I know from back then who were huge Em fans went right back to rock when 50 hit big.

    Em has a lot of fans that otherwise prefer rock to hip hop. I still put him right below Kanye though.

    According to the Daily Telegraph, some comments claim the girl is from the Central Bosnian town of Bugojno, which has a population of 50,000.

    4chan users are believed to have previously outed the British woman who was caught on tape apparently grabbing a cat by the scruff of its neck and dropping it in a garbage can before closing the lid and hurrying away down the street. Death threats against the alleged cat trasher were posted on 4chan and other online forums after the woman’s name and address were apparently leaked online. Yeah, I think most people noticed this. Eminem became that artist that reached an audience who hated Hip Hop. I’d say that these people got at least more adventurous to try other artists, but most of then couldn’t really go far from there.

    But comparing the Kanye scenario I think he reached an even higher status on that area. I’d say, analyzing ’00 for Eminem and ’08 for Kanye West, way more people that don’t like Hip Hop at all are Kanye fans than there were for Eminem back then.

    Because thing is, jus’ like you say, Eminem fans outside the Hip Hop monkeysphere really don’t seem to be that loyal …

    To be fair, in 08 Kanye was singing. So he made some new female fans. They used to play Paranoid at my school gym, and that radio station plays pop songs old and new for the most part. I with Kanye that effect has been much smaller overall.

    Plus with Ye there are at least a lot of new rappers who followed in his footsteps and are getting shine now, so that would validate that people who liked Kanye stayed following rap. Not to mention I dont know of many good, famous rappers that really look up to Em.
