What I like about Martin is that there was a lot of improv so it wasn’t like a traditional sitcom. Most of the sketches were made to be outlandish and ridiculous and IMO it was genius in the process. From the baby poppin’ out of the woman at the baby shower, to fightin’ that big ass possum, to people laughin’ when they clearly couldn’t hold a straight face. There’s a reason why 15+ years later that it’s still funny because everybody was allowed to be natural and freedom of creativity. Damn near the whole cast fed off Martin’s energy to the point where they even read their lines in the same vernacular as Martin. Vivica Fox, Lisa Raye, and a couple others even had non-speaking cameo roles on there if you paid attention. How many people you know in the 90′s could get Iman, Kid (Kid N Play), Biggie, Charles Barkley, and a few other WELL KNOWN celebs on a Fox comedy show with a leading Black actor and all Black cast? None.

Martin incorporated a lot of Pan-Africanism in his show AND stand-ups before BadBoy. Pay attention to all the pictures and his dialogue. Lot of “we don’t play that shit” type of attitude.
