Video: The Roots feat. John Legend – The Fire
Directed by Rik Cordero, who had this to say about his music video short film:
“The Fire” is one of my favorite tracks off HIGO and really feels like something you’d hear in the theater. The line “you don’t say good luck, you say don’t give up” inspired me to create a period piece narrative that stays true to the lyrics while adding another layer to the interpretation.
How I Got Over in stores now.
John Legend & The Roots’ Wake Up! joint album due September 21st.
Previously: John Legend & The Roots feat. Common & Melanie Fiona – Wake Up Everybody

The top of next week’s chart is still too close to call, as a couple of hip-hop heavyweights continue to duke it out in a bout that promises to stay nip and tuck throughout the weekend. If Eminem is victorious, it will be his fifth consecutive week at #1. As for challenger Rick Ross, regardless of where he lands on the chart, dude’s on track to beat the first week of his previous release by about 25k. Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope): 180-190K, *Rick Ross (Def Jam) 180-190K, Sheryl Crow (A&M) 45-50K, Drake (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 45-50K. (HITS Rumor Mill)
^
Eh I guess I rather see Ricky get the number 1 spot than Marshall get it for the 100th time.

Also, I called MONTHS ago that Rawse’s album was gonna catch a brick. 100k is more than respectable for nowadays, but I knew his NR/Twitter/#TeamRicky buzz wasn’t gonna mean shit.
I can only hope to God that after Cam, Jimmy, Gucci, and Rawse have flopped after having strong “internet buzz”, that people will stop taking these comments so seriously and just find a new model.
Sad part is, Rawse stepped his game up something fierce. I’m almost proud of the cop.

@ Iceberg– #1, let’s keep it friendly. I’m not attacking Jay or discrediting the ridiculously good lyrics on BP2.
What I meant was that, for Jay-Z, that album kinda flew under the radar. ’03 B&C got spins, Excuse Me Miss got spins, and it was obviously commercially successful, but it wasn’t a Jay-Z event the way some other albums were. The songs on TBA felt like Comeback Music. The songs on BP2 felt like standard issue stuff that could’ve come from any Jay album, with the exception of the one over the Good Bad & Ugly beat tombout Nas.

Yeah i wouldn’t like to sit through a listen of a whole album produced by him either, Tim was some ill production for Missy & Aliyah when he was sampling heavy but the non-sampling keyboard-arrangement music hes been making since then….lets say i’m not fan of…

But playing Devil’s Advocate aside – can you see yourself playing his joint with Chris Cornell? I’m all for expanding your musical horizons, but Shit, other than BP3 and his joint on the Drake album – have you bumped any of his recet music? He’s nowhere near as inspired as he was when he was banging out music for Aaliyah, Missy and Jay in the 90′s – early 00′s, but that’s OK – no-one stays hot forever.
A Jay and Timbo album would be commercially succesful, but artisitically speaking – giant risk. If Timbo was still a ‘leader’ so to speak – the chemistry would have been great, given how competitive Jay is. To me, Timbaland is Dre status now – it’s nice to hear his work, but you can hear that his priorities are different now and I’m not sure he has it in him to change the whole game one last time….
July 26th, 2010 at 5:24 pm

And with Jay riding shottie, I see Tim pulling out all the stops to prove he’s still Timbo The King.
This is the guy who incorporated baby giggles into Aaliyah’s Are You That Somebody beat.
Don’t count Timbo out yet.

Timbo stay making CLASSIC hits… “Cry me a River” had to be one of the biggest hits ever….
July 26th, 2010 at 5:47 pm
Honestly the sad part is that I won’t count Timbo out if he makes an album with Jay. I would def listen to it (unlike his other recent work), but I have very low expectations.
July 26th, 2010 at 5:47 pm
You’re either a brave man or a completist in that case, because not even die-hard Soundgarden fans were fucking with that shit.
=====================================
It was more Audioslave then Soundgarden and the production wasn’t necessarily suited for Cornell but give Hov those same tracks and see if he doesn’t make a couple of hit records with em.

Honestly – I REALLY hope so.
I need to hear him get an underground artist, maybe get back with Danjahandz and lace this cat with nothing but heat for maybe a year and come out the other end with a classic album. He needs to pull a ‘Lord Willin’, if you will…That would be perfect training for it. With his mainstream credibility he could easily make an album of super inspired, super hard beats and people would feel it.
But right now he’s solely focused on making music for 90lb white women who smoke cigarettes ((c) Pusha) in European dance clubs. For Jay to say tomorrow that his next album wuld be solely produced by Tim would be a real problem…

That’s where we’re going to disagree – IMO The Rage Against The Machine cats just don’t sound right with anyone other than Zach De La Rocha fronting them so to try and recreate that was a mistake in itself.
But at any rate, for someone who had the impeccable ear that Tim had in his hey-day to misjudge tracks for Cornell, shows that there’s something awry there….
July 26th, 2010 at 5:59 pm
everything Tim made during the mid and late 90s was heat.
all missy’s shit included.
You don’t have to like it, but you gotta respect it.

and if that’s really true, the no mixtape stuff because of a leak, then that’s fucking ridiculous.
^^^
He put out ‘Enemy of the State’ around Thanksgiving, and was going to drop a second mixtape on Christmas. He ended up canceling it because training for the Kilimanjaro hike was consuming all of his time. So no, he didn’t cancel the mixtape because of a leak, unless there was a previously planned mixtape I’m unaware of.
‘Enemy of the State’ was ill, too. He destroyed ‘All the Way Turnt Up’ and ‘Fireman’.

A Timbo and Jay album could work but niggas just would have to bring their A game. I have to believe that when u get to that level of success that they have both achieved the hunger definitely suffers.

Which is why ESOM doing what it did hurt Jay more then it helped him.
He needs to experience real failure to reinvigorate his thing but stanleys will buy anything Jay-Z which sends a false message that he’s on the right track.

Timbaland beats always been pop beats… i never really thought he was a big deal… not to say he didnt make some ill shit, but i dont like them shits too much..

Yeah, the Lupe / Black Album thing was surprising. I Googled it and this thread popped up:
slumz.boxden.com/f87/lupe-fiasco-ghostwrites-jay-z-674474/
I feel like some comments are missing so it’s hard to understand fully what’s being said, but it seems like Lupe mentioned ghostwriting for Jay-Z in an interview with Hot 97 back in ’06. Or maybe not, like I said, that thread is fucking confusing.

Someone must contact 50 Cent. That’s all I have to say. Oh wait– Jay’s verse on Under Pressure sounded a shitload like something Drake would write…..

Jay using upcoming for a sound to his album is nothing new, it’s similar to his love for alt rock collaborations.
He’ll have a song with Vampire Weekend for next album… or Arcade Fire.

Yes! My day has been made!
For a year cats tried to convince me that BP3 was a great album/classic…NO!
Minus Empire State of Mind, NO ONE and I MEAN NO ONE can recite a Jay verse from that album like you could up until Kingdom Come.
Sure, 2010 Jay features have been good-to-great on some Andre 3000 circa 2007 shit, but beyond that, honestly BP3 = tied with BP2/Kingdom Come in Jay catalogue IMHO.
July 26th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
The video is dope but it looks like it was created to distract the listener form the real world issues Black Thought is talking about. I think a more auto biopic or biopic treatment would have been better for this vid. It’s harder than ever to make something out of nothing and simultaneously keep the fire. I think the people would benefit from a visual that reflects them. Keep pushin.
July 27th, 2010 at 12:00 am
that video has not a cotdamn thing to do with the song AND it is a narrative that goes nowhere. soldier in an unknown war march white guys through forest, makes them eat other, then let the last two go with a box that has something in it that’s never revealed? wtf? it’s the kind of film a four year old on angel dust would write with broken crayons.
