I really disagree with this. Hip hop’s audience looks completely different in 2010 than it did in 2000. Jay-Z is more important to fans now so at least the popular rappers will look up to him more.

Drake = the 50 Cent of the sensitive-sort-of-intellectual rap. He’s very watered down, but was great on mixtapes, and hit big quick by singing hooks, not rapping. Will branch out further and face a backlash.

For true lyricists in this game, as long as your new material is good you will always compel people who appreciate your music to go back and listen to your old material. And this is what J.cole did with The Warm Up. All this I-don’t-know-if-he-has-crossover-appeal-crap is bogus. The dude can rap. In all honesty, Who Dat did not sound like anything on the radio (or in the Internet for that matter), it’s different–not great, but not bad neither–just different. But it’s a good kind of different. And I think that’s what J.cole has consistently stucked to. His own thing. Even when people were raving about Drake and hailing him the chosen one or whatever, Cole has always maintained that he’s proud of his album and believes people are going to respond to it. Now that this (if on the album) has leaked, it still sounds like nothing that’s out there. But if he believes this his album is good, and these are the tracks that are out there, it just exemplifies the theory that he’s going to stick to what has always worked for him–which is: his witty lyrics and clever metaphors and punch-lines, not some Find-Your-Love-Top-40 hit (no shots). Of course he has to appeal to the masses, but if dude can rock a UK crowd with Who Dat than I say he’s appeal to a much more wider demographic than we think. And what exactly the reach of that demographic is, only time will tell.
