this whole trend of rappers colaborating with these alternative musicians.
^
? Linkin Park & Coldplay? smh. i’ll be nice and say that there were a handfull of MC’s throughout the history of rap who have colaborated with alternative musicians and were pretty damn succesfull at doing so. Jay gets zero credit for this one.
^^^
Jay broke no new ground in this area. Why? Because while Coldplay and Linkin Park are not hip-hop, they are also NOT ALTERNATIVE. They are two of the biggest bands on planet earth. U2, Springsteen, status. Not in quality, but in ability to sell out HUGE arenas, etc.
If Jay would have done a collabo with Sun City Girls or fucking Jandek, it’d be a different story.
Jay was not breaking the mold, he was just collaborating with people as popular (if not more) who just so happen to not be rappers or r & b singers.

She defends the practice as no different than radio payola, and asserts that other hip-hop publications sell their covers indirectly. “Let’s say [a rap magazine] says, ‘If your clothing line pays for the back cover ad, we’ll put you on the cover,’” she says. “I don’t see what we’re doing as any different, or unethical.”
Yet Joe Saltzman, a professor of journalism at USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, notes that payola is unethical and illegal, and argues that Ozone’s practices are a clear breach of journalistic ethics.

I also found some old lyrics of mine, ohhh man hahah
Phenomenon,
I used to play and shit, I think they only need to use a hand signal or sometimes its just very obvious to the players.
At least i thought some type of signal was needed. Sometimes it’s the reward/action awarded after the penalty that shows what the penalty was. Hopefully the commentators say what it is to.
But I think it’s kinda ridiculous if they don’t. I’ve beenw orking and studying, so I haven’t even caught a game. I’m losing.
and I gotta get the fuck out of here and study. So fucking nice in Boston. Enjoy yall Saturdays

Daft Punk > Coldplay & Linkin Park, obviously
What I meant as far as ”B-list” was that no matter what, Daft Punk, while their songs might be known by a great number of people across the world are still not as populist/popular as Coldplay or Linkin Park. Hence showing why Jay really was not pushing any boundaries or doing something cool or particularly wild. Even when Jay used the singer from Empire of the Sun, it was on the intro and you could barely hear the dude.
Trust me, as a dj in places that are NOT hip hop club at all, I know the power of Daft Punk’s music.
As far as new rappers trying to get “weird” by rapping over LCD Soundsystem or Lykke Li or having Francis and theLights produce a song (Cudi & Drake, respectively) they only do that shit on free internet freestyles or deep album track that will never get a video, etc.
Most rappers & producers have terrible taste and would either not know the great shit that’s out there to sample and make hot or choose instead to use trash like “We Built This City” instead.
