You been in this 10, I been in this 5, smarten up
No shots. This week marks the 5 year anniversary of the launch of this website. It should come as no surprise that I never imagined that this little rap blog would alter the trajectory of my life so dramtically. 5 years ago this week I was working as a corporate drone network analyst at a big publishing conglomerate. I enjoyed my job, but like most people, I dreamed of getting paid to do something I really loved. I had discovered the concept of blogging probably a year or so prior and I immediately recognized it as a game changer. I had always enjoyed writing and rap, but I had never seriously considered pursuing writing about rap as a career. I had no formal training in journalism and no college degree to speak of. And magazines/websites don’t hire folks on the strength of their passion for the subject, right? But blogging was the great equalizer. It revolutionized the concept of self-publishing. An aspiring writer no longer had to bother with printing up zines or shooting off writing samples to editors with the hope that somebody would be willing to give them a shot. Now, any kid with access to the internet could share their unfiltered thoughts with the world in real time.
I saw huge potential in this new medium and I was intent on capitalizing on it. It really was one of those light bulb moments where you know something is gonna be big, and you have a chance to get in on the ground floor. Opportunities like that don’t come around every day. So I started a little personal blog on Blogspot and I started writing about shit that was going on in my life and rap and really just whatever I was thinking about at the time. You’ve probably heard the story before. And you know, like they say, the rest is history. So fast forward 5 years and the blog game is on a whole ‘nother level. Rappers shout us out. Bloggers actually matter to record labels now. People come to our sites 10 times day. A bunch of folks hate. And you know what? I did see this happening, I just never imagined that I’d have a front row seat for the revolution. And for that, I’m eternally grateful. Hit the jump for the shout out portion of the post.
To all of the MCs that I grew up on that not only provided entertainment, but literally got me through some of the toughest times of my life. To Herc, Bam and Flash specifically. To all of the early rap bloggers who inspired me and sent links my way and shouted me for my efforts. To all of the commenters who help turn an article into a conversation (or an argument). To the OG Nah Right commenters, because if not for their feedback and input I might have given this shit up after a month. To every visitor who comes here every day. To the universe. To Jay-Z & Nas for proving endless comment section fodder. To my parents whose genes made me into an argumentative fuck. To my old IT manager who saw enough in me to hire me out of the mailroom. To my kids. To nation and Dre, without whom I would probably be unrecognizable to my kids. To my NMC fam (Miss Info included). To Hashim and YN and BFred for recognizing and believing in me before I fully believed in myself. To all of the stand-up rap bloggers who go hard everyday for no other reason than the love. To all of the fuckboy bloggers who can’t keep my name off their keyboards. To the kid who just started blogging this week with big dreams.
But enough of the sentimental shit. Do me a favor and burn one or throw a few back this week in celebration of 5 years of Nah. Here’s to 50 more.

Aight.. let me drop my obligatory congrats and back story. First, all bullshit aside, thanks for providing all this (none).. Since a young bol I was always checkin all the hip hop sites consistently, and on through college. Fall of ’06 I discovered Nah and it’s been a wrap. Could care less what any other site is talkin about. Nah represented everything i cared about in terms of exclusive music, the selected news etc. Even the view points and opinions.
Spent maybe 6 months or so commenting.. but then got too busy at work to keep up. Not to mention, the comments section aint what it used to be.. no shots tho.. Yall Nahggers still provide some good reading and i still do my fair share of lurking. Still.. no site comes anywhere near Nah comments. And u know artists etc (Aubrey i know u in here!) read this shit from time to time.. That says something in itself.
Nuff of the corny shit, sorry yall for the essay. But as a loyal nahgger, felt i had to drop some thoughts.

I just wanted to personally thank you for putting in the hours on Nah Right. It is hands down the best blog on the web. I’ve been blogging for a year now and I just got around to reading your interview you mentioned in your article above. You really gave some great advice about making your opinion heard despite someone disagreeing with you. I’ve been guilty as of late just posting album art and a song and not really expressing any opinion. Plus, I think you’re absolutely right about content being more important than fancy graphics.
